How to Strengthen Natural Lashes: Serums, Habits and What Actually Works

Guide to strengthening lashes: serums with biotin and peptides, daily habits and when to see a specialist.

Lash anatomy: life cycle and key figures

Each upper eyelid contains between 90 and 120 lashes arranged in 5-6 rows, whilst the lower lid holds between 70 and 80 in 3-4 rows. Understanding lash biology is essential to grasp why they weaken and how to strengthen them effectively.

The lash life cycle has three phases: anagen (active growth), lasting 30-45 days and determining maximum length; catagen (transition), a 2-3 week period during which the follicle contracts; and telogen (rest and shedding), which extends 2-3 months before the lash falls out and the cycle restarts. Under normal conditions, we lose between 1 and 5 lashes per eye per day.

The average lash measures 8-12 mm on the upper lid and 6-8 mm on the lower. Its average thickness is 0.05-0.07 mm. Unlike scalp hair, lashes do not grow indefinitely: they are genetically programmed to reach a maximum length. Serums work by prolonging the anagen phase, not by creating new follicles.

The 5 main aggressors that weaken your lashes

65% of consultations about weak lashes at beauty salons are due to cumulative damage from daily habits, not genetic factors. Identifying and eliminating aggressors is just as important as applying a restorative treatment.

1) Misused eyelash curler: applying excessive pressure or using it on lashes coated with dried mascara tears lashes out from the root. Use it only before mascara, never after. 2) Daily waterproof mascara: water-resistant formulas require friction to remove, damaging the cuticle. Reserve waterproof mascara for events, a maximum of 2-3 days per week. 3) Rubbing the eyes when removing makeup: as we explain in our guide to correct makeup removal, the 15-20 second pressure technique prevents breakage.

4) Lash extensions without breaks: the weight of the adhesive and added fibre for more than 6 consecutive months weakens the follicle. We recommend breaks of 4-6 weeks every 3-4 months. 5) Nutritional deficiencies: biotin, iron, zinc and vitamin D are essential for the anagen phase. A blood test can reveal deficiencies that manifest as thinning lashes.

Active ingredients in serums: what works and what does not

Only 3 categories of ingredients have proven evidence for strengthening lashes, and 80% of mass-market serums do not contain any of them at an effective concentration. Knowing the active ingredients saves you money and time.

IngredientMechanismEfficacyPrecautions
Bimatoprost (prostaglandin analogue)Prolongs anagen phaseHigh — 25% more length in 16 weeksPrescription only, may darken iris in light eyes
Peptides (Myristoyl pentapeptide-17)Stimulates keratinModerate — 15-20% more thickness in 8 weeksNo significant side effects
Biotin + panthenolNourishes and strengthens cuticleModerate — reduces breakage by 30%Slower results (10-12 weeks)
Castor oilMoisturises and conditionsLow — no robust clinical studiesMay cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals
Oral biotin (supplement)Systemic nutritional supportLow-moderate — only effective if deficientMay alter thyroid test results

Peptide serums offer the best balance between efficacy and safety for home use. Prostaglandin analogues are more potent but require medical supervision. Castor oil, though popular, lacks scientific backing as a growth stimulant.

How to apply lash serum in 5 steps

Incorrect serum application reduces its efficacy by between 40 and 60%, turning an effective product into a wasted investment. Most mistakes are made during preparation, not during application itself.

Step 1 — Thorough cleansing: remove eye makeup following the double cleansing routine. Any makeup or oil residue blocks serum absorption at the follicle. Step 2 — Dry completely: wait 2-3 minutes after cleansing. Moisture dilutes the concentration of the active ingredient. Step 3 — Apply at the root: use the precision applicator to deposit a fine line at the base of the upper lashes, as though applying invisible eyeliner.

Step 4 — Do not blink for 30 seconds: allow the product to settle into the follicle. Step 5 — Apply only at night: during sleep, cell regeneration is 30% more active. Applying in the morning under makeup reduces absorption and can cause irritation. The minimum effective course is 8 consecutive weeks, once daily.

7 daily habits for stronger lashes

Beyond serums, 7 complementary habits can reduce lash loss by up to 50% when adopted consistently over 4-6 weeks. These are small changes with significant cumulative impact.

1) Remove makeup with pressure, not friction (15-20 seconds per eye). 2) Replace your mascara every 3 months — oxidised formulas dry out, become gritty and pull out lashes when removed. 3) Avoid heated eyelash curlers — heat combined with pressure weakens the fibre. If you use one, keep it unheated and ensure the rubber pad is in good condition. 4) Sleep on your back or side — sleeping face down crushes lashes against the pillow for 7-8 hours.

5) Include protein and biotin in your diet: eggs, salmon, spinach and nuts provide the key nutrients. 6) Do not touch or rub your eyes — every time you rub your eyes, you dislodge an average of 1-3 lashes in premature telogen phase. 7) Wear sunglasses — UV radiation degrades melanin and keratin in the lash, making it more brittle. These habits complement any professional treatment from our lash services in Gandía.

When to see a doctor about lash loss

Losing more than 5-6 lashes per eye per day for more than 2 consecutive weeks may indicate an underlying medical condition requiring professional diagnosis. Distinguishing between cosmetic and pathological loss is crucial for choosing the right treatment.

See a dermatologist if you experience: madarosis (partial or total loss without an apparent cosmetic cause), recurrent blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margin with crusting), trichotillomania (the urge to pull out lashes), or if the loss coincides with hair loss from the brows or scalp. Conditions such as hypothyroidism, alopecia areata and lupus can manifest first in the lashes.

Before your appointment, note: when the loss started, what products you use, whether you are taking any new medication and whether there is a family history. If your brows are also thinning, mention it as it could point to a systemic cause. At Adrian Beauty Studio we can help with cosmetic treatments whilst your doctor addresses the medical cause.

Frequently asked questions about lash serums

How long does a lash serum take to show results?

The first visible results appear between weeks 4 and 6 with peptide serums, and between weeks 8 and 12 with biotin and panthenol formulas. Prostaglandin analogues show changes from week 4, with full results at 16 weeks. The key is consistency: stopping treatment before 8 weeks invalidates the investment because the lash cycle has not completed a full rotation.

Can I use a serum if I have lash extensions?

Yes, but with precautions. Apply the serum only along the root line, avoiding contact with the extension adhesive. Oil-based serums can weaken cyanoacrylate glue. Choose water-based formulas and apply with a micro-brush, not the standard applicator. Ideally, use serum during extension breaks to strengthen natural lashes before the next application.

Do lash serums darken the eyes?

Only those containing prostaglandin analogues (bimatoprost, isopropyl cloprostenate) carry a documented risk of iris hyperpigmentation, particularly in green and hazel eyes. Peptide, biotin or panthenol serums do not alter eye colour. Always read the ingredients list and consult a professional if you have light eyes and wish to use a prostaglandin-based serum.
