Fallera Makeup in Valencia: Professional Step-by-Step Tutorial

A professional guide to achieving flawless Fallera makeup: from skin preparation to finishes that withstand the mascleta, the desperta and a full night through to the crema.

What sets Fallera makeup apart

Fallera makeup must last 14-18 hours straight, withstand tears (the crema is emotional), endure the March heat (25 degrees C and above in Valencia) and look perfect in flash photographs and from a distance during the ofrenda. It is not party makeup with extra blusher: it is a category of its own.

Preparation: 48 hours before

Two days before

A manicure if you want perfect nails. Facial treatments that may leave the skin sensitive. A lash lift with tint at least 48 hours beforehand.

The night before

A hydrating mask (hyaluronic acid or ceramides). An eye contour cream with caffeine. No new products.

The morning of

A gentle cleanser plus a lightweight hydrating serum plus an oil-free moisturiser. Wait 10 minutes before you begin.

The Fallera kit

  • SPF 30+ primer: essential for the ofrenda (2-4 hours in the sun)
  • Long-lasting foundation (16 hours or more): mousse or medium-to-high-coverage fluid. No shimmer particles.
  • Concealer: one shade lighter. Creamy, not liquid.
  • Loose translucent powder: for setting. Pressed powder for touch-ups.
  • Cream blusher plus powder blusher: a double layer means double the staying power.
  • Eyeshadow palette: earth tones, golds, coppers. Burgundy or plum for extra drama.
  • Waterproof eyeliner: black or brown. Gel or fine-tipped pen.
  • Waterproof mascara: ONE coat. Two coats clump when you perspire.
  • Long-lasting lipstick: classic red, raspberry or intense pink.
  • Setting spray: 16 hours or more. Indispensable.

Step-by-step tutorial

45-90 minutes. Apply your makeup BEFORE putting on the dress.

Step 1 -- Flawless base (15 min)

  1. SPF primer. Wait 2-3 minutes.
  2. Foundation with a beauty blender in thin layers. Cover the ears and jawline.
  3. Concealer on dark circles and blemishes.
  4. Set with powder. Baking the T-zone: apply a generous layer, leave for 3 minutes, then remove the excess. This withstands the mascleta.

Step 2 -- Brows (5 min)

If you already have a professional brow design: fill in gaps with a fine-tipped pencil. Clear setting gel.

Step 3 -- Eyes (15 min)

  1. An eyeshadow primer is essential (without it, shadows migrate into the crease within 3-4 hours)
  2. Transition shade in the crease (peach or sienna)
  3. Main shade on the lid: champagne gold, copper or burgundy. Apply with the fingertip.
  4. Dark shade on the outer V. Blend upwards and outwards.
  5. Highlighter on the inner corner and beneath the brow (subtle, no glitter)
  6. Fine eyeliner, thickening at the outer third. Short, upward-angled flick.
  7. Waterproof mascara: one coat on the upper lashes, outer third only on the lower lashes.

Step 4 -- Cheeks (5 min)

  1. Cream blusher on the apples, blended towards the temples
  2. Powder blusher on top. A double layer equals colour that lasts.

Step 5 -- Horchata-proof lips (10 min)

  1. Exfoliate the lips with a damp cloth
  2. A thin layer of balm, 2 minutes, then remove the excess
  3. Line with a lip pencil, filling in the ENTIRE lip
  4. First coat of lipstick with a brush
  5. Press a tissue over the lips and dust translucent powder through it
  6. Second coat of lipstick on top

The three-layer technique: lasts 4-6 hours without a touch-up.

Step 6 -- Setting (2 min)

Setting spray at 20 cm in an X pattern. Allow 60 seconds to air-dry. This turns an 8-hour makeup into 14-16 hours.

Common mistakes

  • Foundation with SPF not tested under flash: a ghostly white cast. Take a flash photo before leaving.
  • Not blending down the neck: the cut-off line shows with the dress.
  • Too much highlighter: in the heat it reads as greasy, not luminous.
  • Forgetting the midday touch-up: powder, lipstick and a tissue. Five minutes save the afternoon.
  • False lashes without experience: a lash lift done 48 hours prior is a safer option.

Survival kit for your handbag

  • Pressed powder with mirror
  • Lipstick
  • Cotton buds (2-3)
  • Paper tissues
  • Mini setting spray (50 ml)

Tailored to experience

First year

Keep it simple: even-toned base, neutral shades, fine eyeliner, red lip. Prioritise staying power.

Seasoned Fallera

A controlled smokey eye, burgundy lips, double liner (dark plus gold).

Fallera Mayor or Corte de Honor

High coverage, facial contouring, a look that works under both flash and natural light.

Post-Fallas skincare

  1. Double cleanse: oil cleanser plus a gentle face wash
  2. Calming toner (aloe, niacinamide)
  3. Overnight mask (ceramides, hyaluronic acid)
  4. Two days without makeup: SPF and moisturiser only

FAQ

How long does it last with waterproof products?

12-16 hours with proper preparation and setting spray. Lips need a touch-up every 3-5 hours.

Which lip shade is the most traditional?

A true medium red. Cool-toned dresses: raspberry. Warm-toned dresses: warm red or terracotta.

False lashes or a lash lift?

If you have no experience with false lashes: a lash lift done 2-3 days beforehand. Natural curl, zero maintenance.

Should I do my makeup after putting on the dress?

Better before. The dress is delicate (silk, brocade).

How often should I touch up?

Every 4-5 hours: blot the T-zone with a tissue, reapply lipstick, check the eyeliner.

Children's makeup?

A light BB cream, a touch of cream blusher, lip gloss, regular mascara. Keep it minimal.
