Pedicure During Pregnancy: Is It Safe? Precautions and Benefits

Pedicures during pregnancy are safe with the right precautions. A trimester-by-trimester guide.
Swollen feet and difficulty reaching your toes make the pedicure one of the most requested services during pregnancy. The good news: it is safe with the right precautions.
Safety by trimester
First trimester
Sensitivity to smells. Choose a salon with good ventilation. If nausea is severe, book an afternoon appointment.
Second trimester
The most comfortable stage. A good time to establish a routine every 4-5 weeks.
Third trimester
Maximum swelling, reduced mobility. Reclined chair (never lying flat for extended periods due to pressure on the vena cava). Sessions of 45-50 min maximum.
Benefits
- Temporary relief from swelling
- Prevention of ingrown toenails
- Control of calluses and hard skin
- Emotional wellbeing
Precautions
- 3-free or higher products (free from toluene, formaldehyde, DBP)
- Reclined at 45 degrees, not lying flat
- Gentle massage, no deep pressure
- Sterilised or disposable instruments
- No aggressive cutting of live cuticle
Gel polish during pregnancy?
Yes. Once cured under LED, it is inert. Note: some hospitals ask for one nail to be left unpolished for the pulse oximeter — check with your midwife.
The pressure-points myth
There is no scientific evidence that pressure on the feet triggers contractions or premature labour. Reviews in the Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine found no causal link. The massage during a pedicure is gentle and brief.
What to avoid
- Hot paraffin wax (can worsen swelling)
- Scalpel for calluses (risk of cuts)
- Strong keratolytic products without supervision
- Concentrated essential oils (rosemary, sage, cinnamon)
Final pedicure before the birth
Weeks 37-38 are ideal. Check the pulse-oximeter situation with your midwife.
