Hyaluronic Acid in Facial Treatments: What It Does, What It Doesn't, and What to Expect

What topical hyaluronic acid achieves in-salon and at home, the difference with injectable forms, and molecular weight types.

What is hyaluronic acid

A naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan. Each molecule can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. By the age of 50, the skin loses roughly 50% of its original reserves.

Topical vs injectable

Injectable: administered with a needle into the deep dermis. Fills lines, adds volume. A medical procedure. Lasts 6-18 months. Topical: applied to the surface. Hydrates, improves the skin barrier. Does not fill deep wrinkles. At Adrian Beauty Studio we work exclusively with topical application.

High weight vs low molecular weight

High weight (>1000 kDa)Low weight (<500 kDa)
PenetrationEpidermis surfaceDeeper layers

DurationHours12-24h, cumulative

The best formulas combine both molecular weights.

What it achieves in-salon

Prior preparation (cleansing, exfoliation) + professional-grade concentrations + application technique = absorption far superior to home use.

Realistic results from 1 session: more hydrated and luminous skin, less tightness for 2-4 days, fine lines less visible, smoother texture. What it does NOT do: eliminate deep wrinkles, provide a lifting effect, or fill nasolabial folds.

What it achieves at home

  1. Apply on damp skin (applying on dry skin can actually dehydrate further)
  2. ALWAYS seal with a moisturiser on top
  3. Look for products with multiple molecular weights
  4. Allow 4-6 weeks of consistent use to see results

Combinations that enhance results

  • + Vitamin C: luminosity + hydration
  • + Niacinamide: barrier + sebum control + hydration
  • + Peptides: collagen + hydration
  • + Ceramides: lipid barrier + moisture

In-salon frequency: intense dehydration: fortnightly x4. Maintenance: monthly. In Gandía and Ontinyent. More: facials for 40+, tight skin post-facial.

FAQ

Can it cause an allergic reaction?

Extremely rare. Any reaction is more likely caused by other ingredients in the formula, not by hyaluronic acid itself.

Suitable for oily skin?

Yes, it is an excellent option. It provides water-based hydration, not oil.

Visible results from the first session?

Yes: immediate hydration and luminosity. Cumulative improvement in texture after 3-4 sessions.
