Does Waxing Make Hair Grow Back Thicker? Myths and the Scientific Reality

No, waxing does not make hair grow back thicker or darker. Here is what the science actually says.

The most repeated myth in hair removal

Almost everyone considering waxing for the first time has heard the same claim: if you wax, the hair grows back stronger. The scientific evidence says the opposite.

Hair that regrows after waxing is not thicker, darker or more abundant. What changes is your perception.

What the science says

The most cited study dates from 1928 (Trotter, M., Archives of Dermatology), and has been replicated since: shaving or plucking hair does not alter its thickness, colour or growth rate. A British Medical Journal analysis (2007) confirmed there is no causal link.

Hair thickness is determined by genetics, hormones and age — not by the method of removal.

The hair cycle in three phases

  • Anagen (active growth): 2-6 weeks on the body. The ideal phase for waxing.
  • Catagen (transition): 10-14 days. Hair breaks more easily.
  • Telogen (resting): the old hair sheds.

Not all hairs are in the same phase, which is why some reappear after 7-10 days while others take 3-4 weeks.

Why it seems to grow back thicker

1. The tip of the hair is different

A new hair has an unrefined tip that feels coarser to the touch, even though its actual diameter is the same.

2. Visual contrast is deceptive

After weeks of smooth skin, the first hairs look darker against the pale, even skin.

3. Hair-cycle synchronisation

With regular sessions, follicles partially synchronise: many hairs emerge at once, giving the impression of greater density.

What does change with continued waxing

Hair gradually weakens

With regular waxing over months, hair grows back finer, less dense, takes longer to reappear and becomes lighter. Repeatedly pulling out the hair can partially damage the follicle.

Skin texture improves

Wax acts as a gentle mechanical exfoliant. Over time, the skin feels smoother between sessions.

Other myths

  • Waxing causes more ingrown hairs: it can happen with any method. Exfoliating 48 hours beforehand reduces the risk.
  • If you stop waxing, it comes back worse: false. It returns to its natural, genetically determined state.
  • Waxing darkens the skin: no. Hyperpigmentation results from waxing plus sun exposure without SPF.

Are there cases where hair genuinely changes?

Yes, but not because of hair removal: hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, PCOS), puberty/ageing, stress or nutritional deficiencies.

How to get the most from waxing

  1. Every 4-5 weeks
  2. Minimum 5 mm of hair length
  3. Exfoliate 24-48 hours before
  4. No creams or oils on the day of your appointment
  5. Moisturise daily between sessions
  6. Do not shave between appointments

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions before I notice finer regrowth?

From the fourth or fifth consecutive session (4-5 months).

Is hot wax better than cold wax?

Hot wax opens the pore and makes extraction easier. Cold wax breaks more hairs. At Adrian Beauty Studio we use high-quality hot wax.

Can I alternate between waxing and shaving?

You can, but you will lose the cumulative benefits of waxing.

Can hair removal create hair where there was none?

No. Wax only acts on existing follicles.

At Adrian Beauty Studio we offer waxing in Gandia and Ontinyent.
