Waxing vs Laser Hair Removal: A Complete Comparison

Waxing removes hair from the root with instant results that last 3 to 5 weeks; laser gradually reduces regrowth over a course of sessions. Here is how they compare.

Waxing pulls hair out from the root and gives instant results that last 3 to 5 weeks; laser hair removal destroys the follicle gradually and can reduce regrowth by up to 80-90% after a full course of sessions. Which one suits you depends on your skin type, hair colour, the area, your pain threshold and your budget. Here's everything you need to decide.

This comparison covers how each method works, how long results last, pain, contraindications, aftercare and who each method suits best. For a complete guide to hair removal methods, you can also read our in-depth article on waxing.

Waxing: Pros and Cons

How Does Waxing Work?

Waxing means spreading a layer of hot or warm wax over the skin so it grips the hair. When it's pulled off quickly against the direction of growth, the hair comes out from the root, bulb included.

There are different waxes for different areas and sensitivities. Low-melt hot wax (Perron Rigot or similar) is the usual choice for sensitive areas such as the bikini line and Brazilian, because it moulds better to the body and breaks fewer hairs. Warm strip wax is used on larger areas such as legs, arms or back, where speed matters more.

Hair needs to be at least 3-5 mm long for the wax to grip it properly. That means letting it grow between appointments, which some people find annoying.

Main Advantages of Waxing

  • Instant results: you leave the salon with smooth skin after one session.
  • No skin-type limits: it works on any skin tone and any hair colour, including blonde, red or grey.
  • Natural exfoliation: the wax also lifts dead skin cells, so skin feels softer.
  • Gradual weakening: with regular sessions, hair tends to grow back finer and sparser.
  • Affordable and no commitment: there's no long course; you can wax as a one-off or regularly.
  • Works almost anywhere: from brows and lip to a full-body wax for women or a full-body wax for men.

Disadvantages of Waxing

  • Temporary: results last 3 to 5 weeks depending on the area and your hair growth cycle.
  • Needs a minimum length: you have to let hair grow between sessions, which can be a pain in summer.
  • Some discomfort: it hurts more in some areas (bikini line, underarms and lip), though it eases with regular waxing.
  • Possible irritation: temporary redness, occasional folliculitis or ingrown hairs if you don't exfoliate between appointments.
  • Ongoing: unlike laser, waxing doesn't aim for permanent hair reduction.

Laser Hair Removal: Pros and Cons

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light that's absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle. The light turns into heat, damaging the follicle and making it harder (or impossible) for it to grow hair again.

The most common devices in clinics are the diode laser (808 nm), the alexandrite laser (755 nm) and intense pulsed light (IPL), which strictly speaking isn't a laser but broad-spectrum light. The type of device decides which skin types can be treated safely.

Hair has to be in the anagen (active growth) phase for laser to work, and only some follicles are in that phase at any one time. That's why you need several sessions (usually 6 to 10, spaced 4-8 weeks apart) to catch every growth cycle.

Main Advantages of Laser

  • Long-lasting reduction: after a full course, most people see 80-90% less hair.
  • Less upkeep long term: you may need yearly top-ups, but far less often.
  • Sessions hurt less over time: as the hair weakens, you feel it less.
  • No hair length needed: in fact, you're asked to shave 24-48 hours before each session.
  • Quick on small areas: underarms or upper lip can take under 10 minutes per session.

Disadvantages of Laser

  • Time commitment: a full course takes 8 to 14 months depending on the area.
  • Higher upfront cost: it may work out cheaper in the long run, but each session costs more than a wax.
  • Skin-type limits: laser works best with a strong contrast between light skin and dark hair. Very dark skin (types V-VI) needs specific diode devices, and blonde, red or grey hair responds poorly or not at all.
  • Sun sensitivity: you have to avoid strong sun before and after each session, which makes summer scheduling tricky.
  • Possible temporary effects: redness, slight swelling around the follicles or pigment changes (lighter or darker patches), usually reversible.

Side by Side: Waxing vs Laser

Effectiveness and How Long Results Last

CriterionWaxingLaser

Sessions for best resultsOne session (repeated monthly)6-10 sessions + yearly top-ups
Type of resultTemporary (hair grows back)Long-lasting reduction in thickness and density

Waxing gives you instant results; laser takes patience but rewards you with a longer-lasting reduction. Neither is technically "permanent" in the strict sense: wax because the follicle regenerates, and laser because some follicles can wake up again with hormonal changes.

Pain and Discomfort

On a rough scale of 1 to 10:

  • Waxing on legs or arms: 3-4/10. A short, sharp sting with each pull.
  • Waxing a Brazilian or underarms: 5-7/10. More sensitive, especially the first few times.
  • Laser on legs or arms: 2-4/10. A feeling of heat or a light prick, softened by the device's cooling system.
  • Laser on the bikini line or lip: 4-6/10. Like an elastic band snapping; modern devices with a cooling head take a lot of the edge off.

With both methods, it hurts less as sessions go on. If the bikini line is your most sensitive area, read our guide to bikini wax irritation before your appointment.

Upkeep and How Often

With wax, the usual cycle is one session every 3-5 weeks depending on the area and how fast your hair grows. Regular waxers often notice hair takes longer to come back and grows finer over time, but you still need regular appointments.

With laser, sessions are spaced 4-8 weeks apart during the initial course (6-10 months). After that, top-ups are usually every six months or once a year. Long-term upkeep is much lower.

Body Areas: Which Method Where?

  • Full legs: both work well. Wax gives instant results; laser appeals if you want to reduce thickness for the long haul.
  • Bikini line and intimate area: low-melt hot wax works very well here and gives a precise finish (Brazilian, Hollywood). Laser treats the area too, but needs more sessions because the follicles are so dense.
  • Underarms: responds quickly to laser (thick, dark hair for most people). Wax works well too, though it's particularly sensitive the first few times.
  • Upper lip and brows: wax gives millimetre control over the shape. Laser is an option for the lip, but not for brows, because they're too close to the eye. For brows, see our article on eyebrow waxing.
  • Back and chest (men): large areas where laser is very efficient long term. Wax is a good option as and when; we have a dedicated guide to back waxing if you're interested.

Skin Type and Colour

This is one of the biggest factors in choosing a method:

Skin type (Fitzpatrick)WaxingLaser
I-III (fair skin)✅ No limits✅ Ideal, especially with dark hair
IV (Mediterranean skin)✅ No limits✅ Suitable with diode or Nd:YAG
V-VI (dark skin)✅ No limits⚠️ Only with specific devices (Nd:YAG). Risk of lighter patches with other devices

Hair colour matters too: blonde, red or grey hair doesn't have enough melanin for the laser to pick up, so wax is the more effective option.

Who Is Each Method Best For?

Ideal for Waxing

  • People with light, blonde, red or grey hair (laser won't work well for them).
  • Anyone who wants instant results without committing to a long course.
  • Darker skin types (V-VI) without access to specific laser devices.
  • Anyone who prefers to spend less per session.
  • People who like the extra smoothness that comes with the exfoliating effect.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as laser isn't recommended at these times.

At our Ontinyent salon, you'll find waxing specialists for every area, covering the 17 body areas we offer.

Ideal for Laser

  • People with dark hair and skin types I to IV (the strongest contrast gives the best results).
  • Anyone looking for a long-lasting reduction and willing to invest in a course of sessions.
  • People who react easily to wax or tend to get folliculitis or ingrown hairs again and again.
  • Anyone who doesn't want to let hair grow between sessions.
  • Areas with very dense hair where monthly waxing feels like a lot.

Contraindications and Medical Restrictions

It's important to know each method's limits before you decide. Always ask a professional if you're unsure about your own case.

When not to wax:

  • Recent use of topical retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene): the skin is thinner and can tear.
  • Active sunburn, open wounds or skin infections in the area.
  • Oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane): wait at least 6 months after finishing the treatment.
  • Significant varicose veins in the area (check with the therapist).

When not to have laser:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • A recent tan or strong sun exposure in the previous 2-4 weeks.
  • Photosensitising medication (some antibiotics, contraceptives, antidepressants). Check with your doctor.
  • Tattoos in the treatment area (laser must not be used over ink).
  • Active cold sores on the face (it can trigger outbreaks; some protocols prescribe preventive antivirals).
  • A history of keloids or abnormal scarring.
  • Some autoimmune conditions that affect the skin (lupus, active vitiligo).

If in doubt, the safest thing is to ask the specialist first. At Adrian Beauty Studio Gandia and Adrian Beauty Studio Ontinyent we check your skin before every wax.

Aftercare: Waxing vs Laser

After a Wax

  1. First 24 hours: avoid direct sun, saunas, chlorinated pools and hard exercise (sweat can irritate open follicles).
  2. Soothe: apply aloe vera gel or an unscented calming lotion to reduce redness.
  3. Gentle exfoliation from day three: use an exfoliating mitt or a fine scrub 2-3 times a week to prevent ingrown hairs.
  4. Loose clothes: especially after a bikini or underarm wax, avoid tight or synthetic fabrics on the first day.
  5. Hands off: touching the area transfers bacteria and can cause spots or folliculitis.

After Laser

  1. Strict sun protection: SPF 50+ on the treated area for at least 2 weeks. This is the most important rule.
  2. No scratching or exfoliating: you may see redness around the follicles (small red dots around each one) that fades in 24-72 hours.
  3. Cold compresses: if you feel heat or swelling, apply something cold wrapped in a clean cloth.
  4. Avoid extreme heat: saunas, hot baths and hard exercise for 48 hours.
  5. No waxing or tweezing between sessions: you can shave, but pulling hair out interferes with the laser course.
  6. Report anything unusual: blisters, lasting pigment changes or severe pain should be checked with the clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Removal

How Long Do Waxing Results Last?

Waxing results usually last 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the area and how fast your hair grows. Legs tend to stay smooth longer than the lip or underarms, where the growth cycle is shorter. With monthly sessions, many people notice the hair comes back finer and sparser. Even so, wax doesn't permanently destroy the follicle, so the hair always grows back.

How Long Do Laser Results Last?

After a course of 6-10 sessions, hair is reduced by 80-90%. That result can last for years, although some follicles can wake up again with hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, certain medicines). Most people have one or two maintenance sessions a year to keep the results. It's important to understand that laser greatly reduces hair but technically isn't 100% "permanent hair removal" in every case.

Which Hurts More: Waxing or Laser?

Pain is very personal and depends on the area, how thick the hair is and how sensitive you are. Broadly, waxing gives a sharp, short pain with each pull (3-7/10 depending on the area), while laser feels like a hot prick or an elastic band snapping (2-6/10). With both, the first sessions are usually the worst and it gets easier. The most sensitive areas for both methods are the bikini line, underarms and upper lip.

Is Laser Safe for All Skin Types?

Not for every skin type, and not with every device. Skin types I to IV (fair to Mediterranean) suit most lasers best. Types V and VI (dark skin) need specific devices such as Nd:YAG, which has a longer wavelength and goes deeper without damaging surface melanin. Using the wrong device on dark skin can cause burns or pigment changes. That's why it's essential to go to a professional clinic that assesses your skin type and picks the right device.

Can I Combine Both Methods on Different Areas?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Many choose laser for areas with dark, thick hair (legs, underarms, bikini line) and wax for areas where laser doesn't work, such as fine blonde hair on the forearms or face. What matters is not using both on the same area at the same time: if you're doing a laser course on your bikini line, don't wax it between sessions, because you'd be removing the hair the laser needs to find in the follicle. For areas in a laser course, shaving is the only compatible method between sessions.

Which Is Cheaper in the Long Run?

It depends on how far ahead you look. Waxing costs less per session, but repeating it every month for years can add up to more than laser. Laser needs a bigger upfront investment (6-10 sessions plus top-ups), but if the results hold, it tends to cost less over 3-5 years. At our salons we only do waxing (we don't offer laser); you'll find up-to-date prices on our waxing page.

Are There Side Effects or Contraindications?

Both methods have mild, common side effects: temporary redness and some sensitivity or irritation in the treated area. Waxing can cause folliculitis (spots from an inflamed follicle) and ingrown hairs if you don't exfoliate between sessions. Laser can cause swelling around the follicles and, less often, temporary pigment changes. The contraindications differ: avoid waxing on skin treated with retinoids or sunburnt skin; laser isn't suitable during pregnancy, after a recent tan, on tattooed skin or with certain photosensitising medicines. Always tell your therapist about any medical treatment or skin condition before your session.

Which Is Better for Sensitive Areas Like the Intimate Area?

Both work for the intimate area, with a few caveats. Low-melt hot wax is the usual salon choice for Brazilian and Hollywood waxes: it gives a precise finish and the therapist can adapt the technique to your body. Laser also gives good results on the intimate area, though it usually needs more sessions (8-10) because the follicles are so dense. It comes down to whether you want instant results (wax) or long-term reduction (laser). To find out more, read our guide to bikini wax irritation.
