Hollywood wax in Gandia: complete guide, preparation and aftercare

A Hollywood wax covers the whole intimate area: bikini line, perianal area and buttocks. Here is how to prepare, what happens in the room and how to look after your skin afterwards.

A Hollywood wax covers the whole intimate area: bikini line, perianal area and buttocks, often combined with legs and underarms in the same appointment. It's the most complete waxing service in Gandia and also the one that raises the most questions, especially about preparation, how much it really hurts and aftercare. Also available as waxing in Ontinyent.

If you're looking for a salon for a Hollywood wax in Gandia or Ontinyent, this guide covers everything you need to know before you book.

What is a Hollywood wax and which areas does it cover?

In Spain this is called "integral" waxing, and it refers to the entire intimate area, not just the bikini line. In practice, a Hollywood wax includes:

  • Bikini area (full Brazilian: pubic area, outer labia, inner labia)
  • Perianal area
  • Buttocks
  • Optionally combined with legs, underarms, the line below the belly button or other body areas

The perianal area and the bikini line are the parts that need the most skill. The skin there is especially thin, close to mucous membranes and very sensitive, so it calls for the right wax, a controlled temperature and a therapist experienced in professional intimate waxing.

Hollywood vs Brazilian vs semi-Brazilian: the key differences

These three terms are often confused. The practical difference:

  • Brazilian: removes hair from the pubic area and the front of the intimate area (labia). It can be fully bare or leave a small design. It doesn't include the perianal area or buttocks.
  • Hollywood (full intimate wax): everything above plus the perianal area and buttocks. The most complete option for the intimate area.
  • Semi-Brazilian (or half Brazilian): tidies the outer edge of the bikini line without treating the inner area. Ideal for upkeep between full appointments or if you're just starting out.

For a more detailed explanation with examples, our Brazilian and Hollywood wax comparison goes through each option.

How to prepare for a Hollywood wax

Good preparation reduces discomfort, helps the wax grip and minimises irritation afterwards. It isn't complicated, but there are a few specific steps.

Shower, exfoliate and moisturise before your appointment

The day before: gently exfoliate the areas to be waxed with an exfoliating mitt or a mild body scrub. This removes dead skin cells and frees hairs that may be starting to grow in, so the wax can catch them from the root. Don't exfoliate the genital area itself.

On the day: shower with lukewarm water, not hot. Don't apply moisturiser, body oil or body lotion to the areas being waxed. Any greasy residue creates a barrier that stops the wax gripping the hair properly.

Minimum hair length: hair should be at least 3-4 mm long (roughly 3-4 weeks since your last wax). If it's shorter, the wax won't catch it properly from the root and the result will be patchy. If it's very long (over 1 cm), you can trim it slightly beforehand.

Clothing: wear loose, breathable clothes, especially around the bikini area. Avoid tight synthetic fabrics both for the appointment and for the journey home.

What to avoid in the 24 hours before your wax

A few things that seem harmless can complicate the session or increase the risk of a reaction:

  • Hair removal creams or self-tan: they alter the skin surface and can cause reactions when combined with hot wax.
  • Strong sun exposure: sunburnt or freshly tanned skin shouldn't be waxed. Wait at least 48 hours after strong sun or a sunbed session.
  • Topical retinoids (retinol, tretinoin): stop them 3-5 days before. They thin the skin and considerably increase the risk of the skin lifting.
  • Your period: the intimate area is noticeably more sensitive just before and during your period. If you can, book for the week after.
  • Too much caffeine: not a strict contraindication, but it can heighten sensitivity if you're particularly sensitive to pain.

The process: how a professional Hollywood wax is done

Step by step at Adrian Beauty Studio

The treatment follows a logical order to keep discomfort low and get a clean result:

  1. Cleansing: any product residue is removed with a toner or a specific cleansing solution. The skin must be completely clean and dry before the wax goes on.
  2. Pre-wax powder: talc or a specific powder absorbs surface moisture and creates a thin protective layer between the wax and the skin, so the wax sticks less to the skin itself.
  3. Applying the wax: on sensitive areas such as the bikini line and perianal area we mainly use low-temperature hot wax or stripless (film) wax, which wraps around the hair without sticking to the surrounding skin. The temperature is always checked before applying to avoid burns.
  4. Removal: always against the direction of hair growth, with a quick pull parallel to the skin, never upwards, to minimise trauma to the follicle.
  5. Tweezing touch-up: fine, short or stray hairs the wax misses are removed with precision tweezers.
  6. Soothing finish: a post-wax oil or gel with ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile or tea tree oil is applied to reduce immediate redness and calm the follicles.

How long it takes and what to expect

The full intimate area — bikini, perianal and buttocks — takes around 30 minutes: Hollywood bikini €19 (15 min), perianal €12 (5 min) and buttocks €12 (10 min). On a first visit, with denser hair, it can take a little longer. If you add legs and underarms, the appointment is longer accordingly.

The first appointment is usually the most uncomfortable, because the hair is coarser and the follicle isn't used to the waxing cycle. From the second or third session on a regular cycle, the hair grows back finer and the sensation is noticeably milder.

Aftercare: what matters most after a Hollywood wax

Intimate areas need especially careful aftercare. The follicles stay open after the session, and in the first few hours the skin is more prone to irritation, infection and ingrown hairs.

For a full guide, see also our waxing aftercare guide, which covers every body area in detail.

The first 24-48 hours: the most important part

  • No hot showers: very hot water opens the follicles and increases irritation. Use lukewarm or cool water for the first 24 hours.
  • No intense exercise: sweat on freshly waxed skin encourages bacteria in the open follicles. Wait at least 24 hours.
  • No pool, hot tub or beach: chlorine and sand are harsh on freshly waxed skin. Wait at least 48-72 hours.
  • No sex: friction and heat irritate the area and increase the risk of infection. The usual advice is to wait 24-48 hours.
  • Cotton underwear: avoid lace or synthetic fabrics that rub and trap heat on the waxed area.
  • No alcohol-based deodorant: if you've also had your underarms waxed, avoid products with alcohol or perfume for the first 24 hours.

Your aftercare routine for the first month

Days 3-4: start gentle exfoliation with a mitt or body scrub on the legs and buttocks (never directly on mucous membranes). This prevents ingrown hairs before they appear, just as the hair starts pushing towards the surface.

Weeks 1-2: moisturise the waxed areas every day with an unscented body cream or rosehip oil. Well-hydrated skin lets the hair grow back through more easily without getting trapped under the surface.

Weeks 2-4: the hair starts growing back. Avoid shaving between appointments: waxing needs the hair to be at least 3-4 mm long to remove it from the root. Shaving between sessions breaks the cycle and makes your next appointment more uncomfortable and less effective.

How to prevent irritation, infection and scarring on sensitive areas

Scarring from intimate waxing is uncommon, but it can happen if the skin lifts because the wax is too hot, or if the skin is already sensitised by topical medication:

  • Always mention it if you use retinoids, exfoliating acids or corticosteroid creams. They thin the skin and increase the risk of lifting.
  • If you get folliculitis (small red bumps, not painful) in the days afterwards, apply aloe vera gel or a mild antibacterial cream. Don't squeeze or pick them.
  • With an active infection, recurrent herpes in the area or broken skin: don't wax until the episode has fully cleared. Check with your doctor if you have any doubts before your appointment.
  • Chronic ingrown hairs are best managed with regular exfoliation between appointments and a glycolic or salicylic acid serum on areas such as the bikini line and buttocks (never on mucous membranes).

If you're specifically worried about the perianal area, our guide to professional perianal waxing explains the process, technique and aftercare in more detail.

Hollywood wax FAQs

How much does a Hollywood wax hurt?

It does hurt, but it's manageable, and it varies a lot from person to person and with your menstrual cycle. The most sensitive spots are the inner bikini line and the perianal area, where the skin is thinnest. The first session tends to be the most uncomfortable because the hair is coarser and the follicle isn't used to it. With regular sessions the hair gets finer and the discomfort drops noticeably from the third or fourth appointment.

If you're particularly sensitive, you can take a mild painkiller such as ibuprofen 30-45 minutes beforehand. Don't use numbing creams without checking with your therapist first, as some can stop the wax gripping properly.

How often should I have a Hollywood wax?

For the intimate area, the usual cycle is every 3 to 4 weeks. That's how long the hair needs to reach the 3-4 mm minimum that lets the wax remove it effectively from the root. Coming in sooner doesn't improve the result: if the hair is too short the wax can't grab it, so the session is more uncomfortable without being more effective.

Many clients at our Gandia and Ontinyent salons combine their intimate wax with legs or underarms in the same appointment, making the most of each area's regrowth cycle.

Is irritation or redness afterwards normal?

Yes, it's completely normal for the first few hours. The skin reacts to the pull of the wax with mild redness and temporary swelling around the follicles. In the vast majority of cases it disappears within 2 to 6 hours.

If the redness lasts more than 24 hours, blisters appear or the area is unusually hot and swollen, it may be an allergic reaction to an ingredient in the wax or the start of an infection. In that case, see a healthcare professional without delay.

When can I have sex after a Hollywood wax?

Professional salons usually recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before having sex after a Hollywood wax. Open follicles and sensitised skin in the intimate area are more vulnerable to friction and bacteria. Respecting this time significantly reduces the risk of irritation, folliculitis and infection.

What if I have scars or marks?

Old, settled scars aren't an absolute contraindication, but they do need care. Scar tissue has a different texture and elasticity and can react differently to wax. Always tell your therapist before you start so she can adapt the technique or avoid certain spots if needed.

Stretch marks and superficial marks, on the other hand, aren't usually a problem. If you're unsure about a specific area, a small patch can be tested before treating the whole area.

Can I have a Hollywood wax if I have ingrown hairs?

It depends on their state. If the ingrown hairs are active and inflamed — with visible pus, strong redness or a lot of pain — it's better to wait for them to settle before waxing. If they're chronic ingrown hairs without active inflammation, waxing can help free them, and your therapist can remove some with precision tweezers during the appointment.

The key to preventing ingrown hairs long term is regular exfoliation between appointments, starting 3-4 days after waxing. Our guide to bikini wax irritation has more tips for managing this over time.
