What Is Eyebrow Waxing?

It's a hair removal technique that combines efficiency and precision to define the architecture of the brow in a lasting way. Unlike tweezing, which works hair by hair, wax lifts several hairs at once along an exact line. That makes it easier to get an even, symmetrical shape and consistent results from one session to the next.

How the technique works and why choose waxed brows

The wax — usually a low-temperature wax for the brow area — is applied in the direction of hair growth and removed against it with a quick, controlled movement. This pulls the hair out from the root rather than cutting it at the surface, so the skin looks cleaner straight away and regrowth takes longer to show than with a razor or tweezing at home.

The result is a brow with crisp edges and proportions that balance the rest of your face. In the salon, wax is usually combined with a finish using thread or tweezers for hairs in harder-to-reach spots, which gives a more precise final outline.

Professional Technique Step by Step

Preparation and consultation

Before applying any product, the beauty therapist looks at your facial structure, the natural arch of your brow and how the hair is currently distributed. This is when the most flattering shape is decided: more arched, straighter, fuller or finer at the tail. If it's your first visit, this is the moment to mention any known allergies to resins or waxes.

If you use topical retinoids, acids (AHA/BHA) or oral isotretinoin, tell us before your appointment: these actives thin the outer layer of the skin and can make it react more strongly to the heat and pull of the wax. In that case, the therapist will consider whether threading is a better option. If you have any doubts about compatibility with a dermatological treatment, check with your doctor first.

We also check whether the area has active irritation, wounds or acne — in that case the service is postponed — and clean the skin with a specific product to remove any make-up or cream that could stop the wax gripping properly.

Applying and removing the wax

With the skin clean and prepped with talc or a pre-wax product depending on the wax used, it's applied to the areas to be waxed: usually under the brow, between the brows and above the brow if there are stray hairs. The working temperature is adjusted to keep discomfort low and protect the skin around the eye, which is thinner than elsewhere on the body.

It goes on in thin layers, is left to set briefly and is removed with a firm pull parallel to the skin. You feel a moment of tension that fades within seconds. Clients who wax regularly describe the discomfort as minimal.

Finishing and shaping the brows

Once the wax is off, the brows are checked hair by hair under a magnifying lamp. Any hairs left behind are removed with tweezers. If there's very fine hair around the brow, it's done with thread so the skin isn't over-treated with heat in the same session.

A soothing serum or cool micellar water is applied to calm the skin and reduce any localised redness. The end result is a clean, well-structured, balanced brow. You'll find up-to-date information on our eyebrow waxing service page.

Duration: How Long Does It Take and How Long Does It Last?

How long the appointment takes

Eyebrow waxing is a quick service. The whole process — prep, application, removal and finish — takes around 10 minutes under normal conditions. Your first visit may take a few extra minutes to talk through shape and preferences.

How long results last (between waxes)

Visible results last between 3 and 5 weeks, depending on your individual growth cycle. Brow hair grows more slowly than hair on other parts of the body, so the gap between waxes is longer than for, say, underarms or bikini line.

With regular, ongoing maintenance, many hairs become less firmly anchored and regrowth tends to be finer and sparser. It doesn't remove hair permanently, but it does make things noticeably easier over the months.

What Results to Expect Straight Away

Visible changes after waxing

The effect is instant. As soon as the wax comes off, the shape of your brow is fully visible. The skin may be slightly red, which in most cases fades within 15-30 minutes. Your face looks more expressive and your eyes more open, and make-up afterwards — eyeshadow, liner, mascara — is much easier to apply on a well-defined brow.

Hair growth: cycle and maintenance

Brow hairs don't all grow at the same time: some are in the anagen phase (active growth), some in catagen (transition) and some in telogen (rest). After waxing, some hairs come through earlier than others and the area may look a little uneven at 2-3 weeks. This is completely normal.

It's best not to tidy up with tweezers at home before your next salon visit, so you don't alter the shape we've designed. At each visit, the therapist works with the hairs that have grown long enough to be removed without forcing them. To keep brows looking even between sessions, brow tinting is a complementary option that defines the arch and fills in visually without extra waxing.

Full Aftercare for the First 24 Hours

What you should AVOID after waxing

The first few hours after waxing are the most important: the follicle is open and the skin is more reactive than usual. These are the standard salon guidelines:

  • Make-up: avoid it for at least 4-6 hours, ideally until the next day if you can.
  • Direct heat: no sauna, steam room or strong sun for the first 24 hours.
  • Pool and sea: chlorine and salt can irritate the waxed area during the first 24 hours.
  • Scratching or rubbing: even if it itches slightly, don't touch the area with your fingers, to avoid bacterial contamination.
  • Exfoliants and topical acids: wait at least 48 hours before using any exfoliating product on the area.

If you get prolonged redness (more than 2-3 hours), pustules or a rash, see a health professional. Allergic reactions to wax are rare but possible. For a full rundown of post-wax care, read our waxing aftercare guide.

  • Apply pure aloe vera gel or a fragrance-free soothing cream to reduce immediate redness.
  • Keep the area moisturised but avoid greasy products for the first few hours.
  • From the second day, go back to your usual facial moisturising routine.
  • If small spots appear after 2-3 days (a normal follicle reaction), a soothing pharmacy product with bisabolol or avenanthramides usually sorts it out without further treatment.

When can I wear make-up again?

Ideally wait at least 4-6 hours after waxing. If you have an event the same day, mention it when booking so we can plan enough time. On sensitive skin, waiting until the next day lowers the risk of irritation and stops make-up clogging freshly opened pores.

Eyebrow Waxing FAQs

Does eyebrow waxing hurt?

The sensation is brief and very bearable: a moment of tension when the wax is pulled, followed by a slight sting that fades within seconds. The eye area is more sensitive than, say, the legs, but with good technique and low-temperature wax the discomfort is minimal. Most clients coming to our Gandia or Ontinyent salon for the first time tell us it was much less uncomfortable than they expected. With regular waxing, the hair grows back finer and it gets easier each time.

How often should I wax my eyebrows?

Usually every 3-4 weeks to keep a clean, defined shape. Some people with faster growth prefer to come every 2-3 weeks; others with finer hair are fine for 5 weeks. Regularity is key: keeping the shape from the start stops hairs growing in unwanted directions and makes every appointment much easier. At our Gandia and Ontinyent salons we adjust the recommended frequency to your own cycle.

What if I have sensitive skin?

Waxing is compatible with sensitive skin as long as low-temperature wax is used and a patch test is done at the first session. If you use retinol, topical acids, tretinoin or any other exfoliating active, tell us beforehand: these products thin the outer layer of the skin and can cause the skin to lift along with the hair. In that case, threading or tweezing are safer alternatives. If you have active rosacea, an active cold sore or dermatitis in the area, the service will be postponed until the skin has recovered. If in doubt, check with your dermatologist before your appointment.

What's the ideal brow shape for my face?

There's no single shape that suits everyone: the best shape depends on your facial structure, the distance between your eyes, your brow bone and the width of your jaw. As a general guide: round faces suit arched brows that add vertical length; square faces suit a soft arch that softens the lines; oval faces can carry almost any shape; long faces benefit from straighter, more horizontal brows that add visual width. In the salon, the therapist does this assessment before every shaping. For a detailed look, read our guide to brow shaping by face shape.

What's the difference between waxing, threading and lamination for brows?

Wax removes hair from the root quickly and lets us work larger areas with a precise design; it's the go-to option for regular maintenance. Threading uses a twisted cotton thread to catch and remove hairs very precisely and without heat; it's ideal for very sensitive skin or for very fine lines where wax could be less exact. Brow lamination in Gandia isn't a hair removal technique: it's a treatment that sets the hairs in place with a smoothing solution (with optional keratin) to add volume and shape without removing any hair, designed for sparse or unruly brows. All three can be combined. You can read more in our guides to brow lamination and threading vs waxing. Also available as brow lamination in Ontinyent.
