Men's groin waxing: technique, pain and aftercare

Groin waxing for men is no longer taboo. Here's what to expect: technique, pain, how long it lasts and aftercare.

Groin waxing for men is no longer taboo. In fact, the bikini line wax is one of the fastest-growing services in beauty salons across the area, in both Gandia and Ontinyent. Whether you're thinking about it for the first time or have been putting it off for a while, here's everything you need to know: what technique is used, how long the result lasts, how to prepare and what aftercare to follow for a comfortable, safe experience.

Why are more and more men waxing their groin?

The benefits of intimate waxing for men

The main reason is comfort. The groin traps sweat and friction, especially in summer or if you do a lot of sport. Removing the hair reduces that damp feeling, makes daily hygiene easier and prevents the constant rubbing that can lead to irritation or folliculitis.

The other common reason is appearance. Many men who already wax their chest or legs want a consistent, clean look all over. If you're interested in a full-body approach, our guide to full-body waxing for men covers the most common areas and how to combine them.

Growing acceptance among younger men

The men who ask for a groin wax in Gandia and Ontinyent are more and more varied: sportsmen, men who look after their image, young guys who see it as part of their hygiene routine. It's clearly become normal, and in the treatment room it's handled with complete professionalism and discretion, just like any other service.

Does groin waxing hurt for men?

It's the question we hear most. The honest answer: it depends, but probably less than you imagine.

What to expect at your first session

The first time is always the most intense. The follicle holds on more firmly when it's never been waxed, so you feel the pull more. From the second or third appointment, the hair comes back finer and removal is noticeably gentler.

Each pull lasts a fraction of a second. It isn't constant pain, just a brief sting. Most men who come to our salon in Gandia tell us they expected something much worse.

How to reduce discomfort

  • Don't trim the hair too short before your appointment. Wax needs at least 5 mm of length to grip properly; if it's too short, it has to be gone over again, and that's what really hurts.
  • Avoid caffeine for two hours beforehand: it makes skin more sensitive.
  • Exfoliate gently a couple of days before. This frees ingrown hairs and helps the hair come out more cleanly.
  • Breathe. It sounds obvious, but breathing out right as the wax comes off reduces how much you feel it.

A safe technique for men's groin waxing

Step by step

  1. Cleansing the area with a pre-wax lotion to remove oil and residue.
  2. Applying talc to protect the skin and help the wax grip.
  3. Spreading the wax (usually low-melt hot wax, which suits sensitive areas better) in the direction of hair growth.
  4. Removal against the direction of growth, with a firm, quick movement.
  5. Checking the area to tidy up any stray hairs.
  6. Applying a soothing post-wax oil or gel with aloe vera or azulene to calm the initial redness.

The whole groin wax takes around 10 minutes. It's quick because the area is small. You can find the details of our bikini line waxing service on our website.

Why choose wax over other options

Compared with a razor, wax pulls the hair out from the root, so the result lasts weeks rather than days. Over time it also weakens the follicle: the hair grows back finer and sparser.

Compared with hair removal cream, wax doesn't put chemicals directly on such a delicate area. If you have reactive skin, that matters.

If you'd like to compare waxing with laser or other techniques, we have a wax vs laser comparison that looks at the differences in depth.

Bikini line, Brazilian or Hollywood: what's the difference?

It's a common question from men asking for the first time:

  • Bikini line (groin): waxing along the crease of the groin, in other words what would show around your underwear or swimming trunks.
  • Brazilian: the groin plus the front of the pubic area, leaving a minimal strip or removing everything.
  • Hollywood: everything above plus the perianal area.

Each option involves a different level of exposure and sensitivity. If you're just starting, the bikini line is the most comfortable way in. You can go further from there if you want. You'll find more about the full option in our guide to Brazilian and Hollywood waxing.

Before your waxing appointment

Preparing your skin

  • Exfoliate the groin with a soft mitt or body scrub 48 hours before your appointment. This minimises ingrown hairs.
  • Moisturise in the days before with a fragrance-free cream. Well-hydrated skin is more supple and copes better with the pull.
  • The hair should be between 5 mm and 10 mm long. If you've just shaved, wait about two weeks before your appointment.

What to avoid before waxing

  • Direct sun on the area in the 24 hours beforehand.
  • Retinol or exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA) for at least 3 days before: they leave skin thinner and more vulnerable.
  • Intense exercise just before the session: sweat can irritate open pores.

Aftercare for groin waxing

The first 24–48 hours

  1. No perfume, deodorant or alcohol-based products on the area.
  2. Avoid tight synthetic clothing. Go for loose cotton.
  3. No intense exercise the same day: sweat on freshly waxed skin can cause spots.
  4. No swimming pools, hot tubs or the beach for 24–48 hours, to prevent infection in the open follicles.
  • Pure aloe vera (no colourings) to soothe the area for the first few nights.
  • From the third day, exfoliate gently once or twice a week to prevent ingrown hairs.
  • A fragrance-free moisturiser every day between sessions.

Groin waxing for men with sensitive skin

Signs of irritation

Mild redness for the first few hours after waxing is normal. However, if you notice pus-filled spots, itching that lasts more than 48 hours or marked swelling, it's best to see a healthcare professional.

Atopic skin or skin prone to folliculitis needs a tailored approach. At our salon in Ontinyent we assess your skin before starting to choose the most suitable wax.

Tailored solutions

  • Low-temperature wax to reduce heat stress on the skin.
  • Smaller strips that cover less skin per pass, reducing tension.
  • A post-wax gel with bisabolol or calendula, ingredients with a proven soothing effect.
  • For extremely sensitive skin, a test on a small area can be done before the full session.

If you're unsure how reactive your skin is, mention it when you book so the therapist can prepare the right products.

How long does the result last?

With wax, the clean result lasts roughly 3 to 4 weeks. From the third week the first hairs start to show, but much finer than the originals.

The ideal frequency to keep the groin tidy is every 4–5 weeks. If you leave it much longer, the hair gets thicker again and the next session may be a little more uncomfortable.

With regular sessions, many men notice that the growth cycle slows down and each wax is quicker and less uncomfortable than the last.

Frequently asked questions about groin waxing for men

Is groin waxing completely safe for men?

Yes, as long as it's done in a professional salon with the right products and protocols. Professional low-melt wax is formulated for sensitive areas and applied at a controlled temperature. In the salon we use disposable spatulas and disinfect the area before and after. The main risks at home are burns from the wrong temperature or infection from poor hygiene; in a salon both are under control.

How long does the result last after a groin wax?

The visible result lasts 3 to 4 weeks on average. Your skin stays completely smooth for the first 10–15 days. After that, fine hair starts to come through, taking another week or two to become visible. The exact time depends on how fast your hair grows and the phase of the growth cycle at the time of waxing.

What should I do if my skin is very sensitive or reactive?

The most important thing is to say so before the session. The therapist will adjust the wax temperature, use smaller strips and apply a specific soothing gel afterwards. If you have active atopic dermatitis or open lesions in the area, it's best to wait until your skin is in good condition. If you have any doubts about a skin condition, check with your dermatologist first.

Are there specific risks with intimate waxing for men?

The risks are the same as for any part of the body: temporary irritation, mild folliculitis and, occasionally, ingrown hairs. The skin in men's groin area tends to be thicker than women's, which is usually an advantage because it copes better with the pull. Following the aftercare – especially avoiding tight clothing and sweat in the first few hours – keeps any complications to a minimum.

When is the best time of year for a groin wax?

There's no better or worse time, but demand goes up in summer because of swimwear. If it's your first time, starting a few weeks before summer gives your skin time to adapt, so your second session is more comfortable just in time for beach season. That said, many men keep up their groin wax all year round for comfort and hygiene, not just for summer looks.
