Unibrow waxing: how it works, aftercare and results

A clean, well-defined space between the brows changes your whole expression. Here is how unibrow waxing works, how long it lasts and how to care for your skin afterwards.

The area between the brows is one of the most requested facial waxing zones, for women and men alike. A clean, well-defined space between the brows completely changes your expression, giving your face symmetry and a groomed look without any make-up. Wax is still the most widely used salon technique for this area because it's precise, quick and long-lasting.

In this guide we explain how between-the-brows waxing works, what to expect at your appointment, how long the results last and how to look after the area afterwards.

What is between-the-brows waxing?

Between-the-brows waxing means removing the hair that grows between your two eyebrows with hot or warm wax. Unlike shaving, wax pulls the hair out from the root, so the result is cleaner and your skin stays smooth for longer.

A professional salon uses wax made specifically for the face – finer and gentler than body wax – suited to how sensitive this area is. It's applied with small spatulas so the therapist can mark out exactly which area to treat.

Wax compared with other hair removal methods

There are several ways to remove hair from between the brows, each with its own advantages:

  • Hot/warm wax: removes hair from the root, lasts 3–4 weeks, ideal for coarse or dense hair.
  • Tweezers: maximum precision, one hair at a time; useful as a touch-up but slower for larger areas.
  • Threading: an Eastern technique that gives precision without any products, although it needs a professional with specific training.
  • Hair removal creams: not recommended between the brows because they're so close to the eyes and can irritate.

Wax stands out because it combines speed, longevity and the ability to remove lots of hairs in one go. It's the most common choice in the salon and gives the best results for the time it takes.

Step by step: how the area between the brows is waxed

Knowing what's going to happen takes the nerves out of your appointment, especially if it's your first time.

Before the treatment

Before applying the wax, the therapist cleans the area with a pre-wax lotion to remove oil and any traces of make-up. This makes sure the wax grips the hair and not the skin.

She looks at the natural shape of your brows and how dense the hair is between them to decide how much wax to use and in which direction. If you use any topical treatment with retinoids or exfoliating acids, it's essential to mention it: these products thin the surface layer of the skin and can cause lifting or excessive irritation.

Applying the wax

Using a small spatula, a thin layer of wax is spread in the direction of hair growth. In most cases we use stripless hot wax (hard wax), which sets on the skin and comes off without strips. This type of wax is gentler and better suited to small areas like this one.

Only a tiny amount of wax is used: we work with portions the size of a small coin to control exactly which hairs come off.

Removal and finish

Once it has set, the wax is removed with a quick flick against the direction of growth. The whole process is quick and efficient. Afterwards, the therapist tidies up any stray hairs the wax missed with tweezers and applies a soothing gel or lotion with aloe vera or chamomile to calm the initial redness.

The result is a clean space between the brows, with a defined line that respects the natural shape of your face.

How long does between-the-brows waxing last?

Results usually last 3 to 4 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. The hair comes back gradually and finer than before, because pulling it out from the root weakens the bulb over successive sessions.

For the first two weeks the area stays completely clean. From the third week the first little hairs may appear, although they're less dense and finer than the original hair. That's why waxing gets more comfortable the more regularly you book.

Does waxing between the brows hurt?

The area between the brows is sensitive because the skin is thin and sits right over the frontal bone, which slightly amplifies the sensation. But the procedure is so short that the discomfort is fleeting: one quick, controlled pull.

What affects how much it hurts

  • Menstrual cycle: skin is more sensitive in the days before and during your period. Booking mid-cycle is usually more comfortable.
  • First time vs later sessions: the first wax always feels stronger because the follicle is fully formed. From the second or third time, it hurts noticeably less.
  • Hair thickness: coarse, dense hair resists more when it's pulled, which can make it more uncomfortable.
  • Skin condition: dehydrated skin, or skin that has recently been in the sun, tends to be more reactive.

How to reduce discomfort

  1. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants for two hours before your appointment, as they increase sensitivity.
  2. Don't apply ice beforehand: it closes the pores and makes the hair harder to remove.
  3. Breathe slowly while the wax comes off. It sounds simple, but controlled breathing reduces how much pain you feel.
  4. Trust the therapist's technique: a quick, firm pull hurts less than a slow or hesitant one.

Aftercare: what to do straight after waxing

Good aftercare is the difference between skin that settles in a few hours and skin that stays irritated for days. The area between the brows is very visible, so it's worth following these steps carefully.

The first 24 hours

  • Don't touch the area with your hands. Even if your skin feels smooth and you want to check the result, your hands carry bacteria that can cause spots.
  • Skip make-up on the waxed area for at least 12 hours. Open pores can get clogged with foundation or concealer.
  • Avoid direct sun without protection. Freshly waxed skin is more prone to hyperpigmentation.

Redness, swelling and sensitivity

Slight redness after waxing is completely normal and usually goes within 1–3 hours. If it lasts more than 24 hours or small blisters appear, apply a soothing cream with panthenol or pure aloe vera (alcohol- and fragrance-free) and avoid products with acids.

If you normally use retinol creams, wait at least 48 hours before putting them back on the waxed area.

Products to avoid

  • Physical or chemical exfoliants for 48–72 hours.
  • Perfume or cologne directly between the brows.
  • Very hot water (steam showers, saunas) for the first 24 hours.
  • Self-tan, which can colour the irritated area unevenly.

Waxing between the brows for men

Men waxing between the brows stopped being taboo a long time ago. At our salons in Gandia and Ontinyent we get more and more male clients who want a clean, natural-looking result.

Tidy-up vs shaping

The key with men is to be clear about which of two goals you're after:

  • Tidying between the brows: removing only the hair that joins the brows, keeping a natural look without changing the brow shape. This is the most common request.
  • Subtle shaping: as well as clearing between the brows, the lower or upper edges are lightly tidied for a more defined shape. This needs clear communication with the therapist about how far you want to go.

In a professional salon the usual approach is to start conservatively. More hair can always come off at the next session, but you can't stick back what's already gone.

Aftercare for men

Men's hair is usually coarser with deeper roots, so you may see slightly more redness after waxing. The aftercare is the same as for anyone: don't touch the area, don't put alcohol-based aftershave between the brows and keep the skin hydrated with a light gel.

How often should you wax between the brows?

It varies from person to person, but the most common routine is every 3 to 4 weeks. Keeping to it has advantages:

  • The hair weakens over time, so each session is less uncomfortable.
  • You keep a consistent, defined line without sudden changes.
  • The therapist can fine-tune the shape at each session as the hair grows.

Avoid tweezing or shaving the area at home between appointments, as you can spoil the line and make the next professional session harder. If a stray hair is really visible, remove it with fine-tipped tweezers without touching the overall outline.

Face shape and the space between the brows

The space between your brows has a direct effect on how your face is perceived. Too wide and your eyes can look far apart; too narrow and you can look as if you're permanently frowning.

The general rule in professional beauty is that each brow should start in line with the side of the nose. This guideline is adapted to your face shape:

  • Oval face: the natural spacing is kept, as the proportions are usually balanced.
  • Round face: a slightly more defined space between the brows visually lengthens the face.
  • Square face: the expression is softened by keeping natural spacing, without removing too much hair.
  • Long face: better not to narrow it too much, so as not to accentuate the length.

At Adrian Beauty Studio in Gandia and Adrian Beauty Studio in Ontinyent, the therapist assesses your features before each session to make sure the result flatters you. If you'd also like to work on the whole shape of the brow, take a look at our guide to eyebrow waxing.

Frequently asked questions about between-the-brows waxing

How often should I wax between my brows?

Every 3 to 4 weeks is recommended, which is the average growth cycle in this area. If your hair grows fast, you may need to shorten it to 2–3 weeks. Keeping a regular routine helps weaken the follicle so results last longer each time. Either way, your therapist will tell you the ideal routine for your hair type and growth rate.

Is waxing safe between the brows?

Yes, as long as it's done in a professional salon with specific facial wax by a qualified therapist. Salon wax is formulated for sensitive skin and applied at a controlled temperature to avoid burns. The main risk at home is using the wrong wax or removing it incorrectly, which can cause irritation or bruising on a very visible area.

Are there any contraindications?

There are some situations where it's better to postpone waxing or check with a professional first. Oral isotretinoin (a treatment for severe acne) is a clear contraindication, as it thins the skin and can cause tearing. Take care too if you have open wounds, recent sunburn, an active cold sore on the face, or if you're using topical tretinoin creams. If in doubt, mention any dermatological treatment when you book.

What are the alternatives to wax between the brows?

The main alternatives are threading, which gives precision without any products, and tweezers, ideal for touch-ups between sessions. Laser hair removal is a long-term option but less advisable between the brows because it's so close to the eyes and it's hard to mark out such a small area precisely. Hair removal creams are not recommended here because of the risk of contact with the eyes.

Can I wax between my brows if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, with the right precautions. A professional salon uses low-temperature wax formulated for reactive skin and applies soothing products straight afterwards. If your skin is particularly sensitive, mention it before your appointment so the therapist can choose the gentlest wax available and keep the number of passes to a minimum. Redness on sensitive skin may last a few hours longer than usual, but with the right aftercare it settles without any problems.

What if I wax between my brows and regret it?

The hair between the brows grows back completely within 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your growth cycle. It's not a permanent change. If you feel too much hair has been removed, you can fill in temporarily with a brow pencil or shadow in the right shade while it grows back. That's why we always take a conservative approach in the salon: it's better to remove less and adjust at the next session.
