Summer Pedicure: How to Get Your Feet Ready for Sandals

A 4-week plan to prepare your feet for summer. Hard skin, cuticles, nail polish and beach care.

Feet spend 8-9 months in closed shoes. When sandal season arrives: cracked heels, dry cuticles, neglected nails. You need a 4-week plan.

Hard skin: a gradual approach

In salon: professional file/rotary tool. At home: gentle file every 3-4 days on damp skin. 20% urea (not 5-10%). More in calluses and hard skin.

Gel polish vs traditional for summer

Recommendation for beach holidays: gel polish.

Beach and pool care

  • Sand: a natural exfoliant but can over-dry. Alternate between flip-flops and barefoot.
  • Salt water: always rinse with fresh water afterwards
  • Chlorine: rinse + moisturise
  • SPF on the tops of feet (they burn easily)

Summer night-time routine (5 min)

  1. Wash feet with neutral soap
  2. Dry thoroughly between toes
  3. 10-15% urea on soles + heels
  4. Petroleum jelly on heels only if very dry
  5. Thin cotton socks

3 times a week maintains results.

Summer pedicure frequency

  • Gel polish: every 4-5 weeks
  • Traditional: every 2-3 weeks
  • Maintenance only: every 3-4 weeks

More in types of pedicure. Ingrown toenails.

FAQ

How far in advance should I start?

4 weeks is ideal. 2 weeks if your feet are already in good condition.

Does gel polish hold up at the beach?

Yes, if properly cured under an LED lamp. Salt water does not affect it. Darker colours maintain their appearance better.

Can I have a pedicure the same day I leave?

Possible with gel polish (instant drying). Ideally, 2-3 days beforehand.
