Lash lift and tint aftercare: the complete guide

A lash lift and tint works on two levels at once: the structure of the lash, to create the curl, and the pigment, to deepen the colour.

Our lash lift and tint service works on two levels at once: the structure of the lash, to create the curl, and the pigment, to deepen the colour. There are three essential aftercare rules: keep your lashes dry for the first 48 hours, avoid oily products around the eyes and protect the pigment from the sun. Neglect the aftercare and the tint can fade within days; look after it and your result will last 6 to 8 weeks.

Why aftercare is different when you combine a lift and a tint

It comes down to chemistry. The lift and the tint work on two different aspects of the lash (structure and pigment), and each has its own weak spots in the first few hours. With a lift on its own, the main job is protecting the newly formed curl. Add a tint and there's an extra layer: the pigment needs time to oxidise and set, and certain products can undo that process before it's finished.

If you already know what a lash lift is and how long it lasts, this guide focuses only on how the aftercare changes when a tint is added.

What happens to your lashes during the combined treatment

During the lift, a perming solution opens up the protein structure of the lash so it can be shaped over a silicone rod; a setting solution then locks that structure into its new shape. The tint goes on next, once the lashes are already curled: a professional pigment penetrates the cuticle and sets through an oxidation reaction that carries on for the next 24–48 hours.

That ongoing reaction is the critical point of lash lift and tint aftercare. If your lashes get wet before it's finished, the process is interrupted and the colour ends up paler than expected. If you use oily products, the lipids act as a solvent and lift away some of the still-fresh pigment.

How it differs from aftercare for a lift without tint

Aftercare for a lash lift without tint is all about protecting the curl for the first 24 hours. With a tint, that window stretches to 48 hours and you add two layers of care that a lift alone doesn't need: protecting the pigment from oils and protecting it from the sun to keep the colour in the long run. The products you use every day become just as important as what you do straight after your appointment.

The first 24–48 hours: critical aftercare for a lash lift and tint

This is the period that matters most. What you do (or don't do) over the first two days decides how intense the colour is and how long the curl lasts.

What to avoid in the first few hours

  • Water, steam and high humidity: no very hot showers, saunas, swimming pools or dips in the sea. Steam opens the cuticle and stops the pigment from setting.
  • Oily products near the eyes: cleansing oils, cleansing balms and rich creams on the eyelids. Lipids dissolve freshly applied tint.
  • Rubbing or touching your eyes: your eyes may itch or water, but rubbing flattens the curl and can shift the still-fresh pigment.
  • Mascara and eyeshadow: leave your lashes make-up free for the first 24 hours. The tint does the visual work on its own.
  • Retinol or acids around the eyes: retinol is exfoliating and can interfere with the cuticle of the treated lash. Keep it away from that area for at least 48 hours.

How to sleep without spoiling the result

The first night is the most delicate. Ideally, sleep on your back so your lashes aren't pressed against the pillow. If you move around a lot in your sleep, a silk or satin pillowcase greatly reduces friction and is much kinder to the newly formed curl than ordinary cotton.

It's also best not to sleep with a fan blowing straight at your face, or in a very humid room: harsh conditions don't help the pigment set during that first stage.

Washing your face the right way

You can wash your face as normal straight away, but adapt the way you treat the eye area. Use lukewarm (not hot) water and an oil-free cleanser, and apply it gently without dragging the skin around your eyelids. Pat dry with a clean towel; don't rub.

If you use micellar water around your eyes, check that it's oil-free. Some enriched versions contain jojoba oil or oily extracts, which aren't suitable in the first few days of lash lift and tint aftercare. And if you're planning a professional facial in Gandia (also available as a facial in Ontinyent), just tell us about your recent lash lift and tint so we can adapt the treatment around your eyes.

Aftercare during the first week

Once the critical 48 hours are over, the restrictions ease off considerably. Still, there are a few habits worth keeping for the first seven days so the treatment can fully settle.

Products that are safe for lifted and tinted lashes

You can use:

  • Oil-free micellar water for the eye area
  • A gentle cleansing gel without harsh sulphates
  • Gel or water-based serum eye products (oil-free)
  • From day three or four, a water-based lash serum

Keep avoiding:

  • Bi-phase make-up removers (the oily phase affects the pigment)
  • Rich creams or oils applied directly to your lashes
  • Waterproof mascara (removing it calls for oily formulas that fade the tint)

Eye make-up: what you can and can't use

From day two or three you can go back to your usual make-up, with one important exception: waterproof mascara. Powder eyeshadow is perfectly fine. So is pencil eyeliner, as long as you remove it with an oil-free micellar water.

You can wear regular (non-waterproof) mascara from day 3, although with the combined treatment you probably won't need it: the curl and the darker tint already define and open up your eyes naturally. If you do wear it, always choose a washable formula so you can take it off without an oily remover.

Long-term care: weeks 2 to 8

After the first week, the treatment is fully set. But some outside factors can shorten the life of the tint or the curl if you don't keep them in check.

How to make your lash tint last longer

In the long run, the pigment has two main enemies: sun and chlorine. UV rays oxidise pigment in the same way summer sun fades coloured hair. At the beach or on very sunny days, sunglasses with UV protection are your simplest ally; they protect your eyes and keep the colour of your lashes too.

At the pool or the beach, chlorine and salt water speed up fading. That doesn't mean you can't swim; just rinse your lashes with fresh water straight afterwards and pat them dry gently. The most effective long-term tweak is still your make-up remover: sticking to oil-free formulas can keep the tint going for 4 to 6 weeks with no extra effort at all.

How to keep your lash lift curl for longer

The curl has its own unavoidable rhythm: lashes grow from the root and the new part comes through straight. You can't stop that process, but you can slow down how quickly it shows. Regularly sleeping face down gradually flattens the curl, and frequently rubbing your eyes wears it out too. Those are the two habits that most shorten how long the curl seems to last.

Hydration also plays a part: well-nourished lashes hold their shape better than dry, brittle ones. If you use an eye cream, apply it to the eyelid only, without letting the product coat the length of your lashes.

Compatible serums and nourishing oils

From the end of the first week you can add a lash serum. The ones that work best with lash lift and tint aftercare are water-based serums with peptides, biotin or panthenol. Oils (castor, argan, jojoba) also work; apply them only at the root with a fine brush so you don't coat the whole lash with lipids that could interfere with the remaining pigment.

Serums containing prostaglandins or their analogues boost growth but also speed up the lash renewal cycle. If you use one regularly, ask your therapist whether to pause it during your lash lift cycle so it doesn't shorten the result.

Common mistakes that ruin a lash lift and tint

  • Using an oil-based make-up remover: the most common one. Oil acts as a solvent for the pigment and lifts some away every time you use it. Switching to an oil-free micellar water is the simplest change with the biggest effect on how long your tint lasts.
  • Getting your lashes wet before 48 hours: it interrupts the pigment's oxidation and leaves the colour paler and patchy. Book the treatment after your workout or swim, never before.
  • Wearing waterproof mascara regularly: it needs oily formulas to come off, which gradually fade the tint. A one-off is fine; regular use wears it down quickly.
  • Not protecting your lashes from the sun in summer: UV breaks down pigment almost as fast as chlorine. Sunglasses with UV protection during long spells in the sun make a real difference to how long the colour lasts.
  • Rubbing your eyes: it flattens the curl and can make lashes fall out early. If your eyes are dry or irritated, lubricating eye drops are more effective and far gentler.
  • Going back to retinol around the eyes too soon: retinol exfoliates and can affect the lash cuticle. Wait at least a week before adding that step back into your night-time routine.

Lash lift and tint aftercare vs lash extension aftercare

Our article on lash lift vs lash extensions gives you the full comparison of the treatments; here we're only looking at the day-to-day upkeep.

With a lash lift and tint, the strictest rules all fall within the first 48 hours. After that, your routine comes down to two lasting tweaks: an oil-free make-up remover and sun protection when you need it. Nothing else in your daily life has to change.

With extensions, aftercare continues for as long as you wear them: no oily products at any time, avoiding prolonged humidity, brushing them every day with a spoolie and infills every 2–3 weeks. Any slip can lead to early shedding and loss of density. If you want a visible result with minimal impact on your usual routine, a lash lift and tint is considerably easier to look after.

When to renew your lash lift and tint

The tint usually lasts 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your aftercare. The curl holds for 6 to 8, until new untreated lashes grow through and the effect loses impact. Most clients renew the combined treatment every 6–8 weeks, in step with the natural growth cycle.

We don't recommend repeating the lift before 6 weeks: the perming agents need time between treatments so they don't weaken the lash through overexposure. If the tint fades before the curl drops, you can refresh just the colour with a lash tint on its own, without repeating the whole lift.

At our salons in Gandia and Ontinyent, we'll advise you on the best time to renew, based on how your own result is holding up.

Lash lift and tint aftercare FAQs

Can I get my lashes wet after a lash lift and tint?

Not for the first 48 hours. Water interrupts the pigment's oxidation reaction and can affect how well the curl sets. After that you can shower and wash your face as normal, using lukewarm water and without rubbing your eyelids. At the pool or the beach, rinse your lashes with fresh water straight after each swim to protect the tint from fading caused by chlorine or salt.

Which serum can I use after a lash lift and tint?

Wait at least a week before adding a serum. The most compatible with lash lift and tint aftercare are water-based serums with peptides, biotin or panthenol. Castor or argan oil also work from the first week onwards, but apply them only at the root with a fine brush so you don't coat the whole lash. Serums with prostaglandins can speed up the lash renewal cycle, so check with your beauty therapist before using them during your lash lift cycle.

Does the tint fade before the lift?

Yes, usually. The tint lasts 4 to 6 weeks; the curl from the lift, 6 to 8. It's normal for the colour to start fading around week 5 while the shape is still visible. When that happens, you can have a tint on its own to bring back the colour without repeating the full treatment. This difference in timing is one of the main things that sets lash lift and tint aftercare apart from aftercare for a lift without tint.

Can I wear mascara after a lash lift and tint?

You can wear non-waterproof mascara from day three. With the combined treatment, most clients find they don't need it: the curl and the darker tint already define and open up the eyes naturally. If you do wear it, always choose a washable formula so you can remove it with an oil-free micellar water. Waterproof mascara needs an oily remover and fades the tint a little more every time you take it off.

How long does a lash lift and tint last?

The full effect (curl and colour) lasts 6 to 8 weeks. The tint tends to fade sooner, at around 4–6 weeks, depending on your daily care. The three things that make the result last longest are oil-free make-up removal, avoiding waterproof mascara and sun protection. You'll find more about the full treatment in our guide lash lift + tint: the perfect combination.

Do the sun or the pool affect a lash tint?

Yes, quite noticeably. UV rays break down tint pigment in exactly the same way the sun fades coloured hair; in summer, sunglasses with UV protection are an easy way to keep the colour for longer. Chlorine and salt water also speed up fading, so rinse your lashes with fresh water straight after every swim. You don't need to avoid swimming; that one simple step is enough.
