Broken nail? Quick salon repair without redoing your manicure

A broken nail at the worst moment? A professional repair restores the nail in around 10 minutes, without redoing your whole manicure.

A broken nail at the worst possible moment: just before an event, halfway through the week or right after you've had your nails done. The good news is that a professional nail repair can restore the look and strength of the nail in around 10 minutes, without redoing your whole manicure. Here we explain when a salon repair is worth it, which techniques are used and how to look after the nail afterwards.

Why do nails break? The main causes

Before looking for solutions, it helps to understand why it happens. Breaks aren't always down to carelessness: internal and external factors combine.

Natural fragility and genetics

Some people naturally have a thinner nail plate, which makes them more prone to cracks and peeling. Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause) can also affect how hard your nails are for a while. If your nails have always been fragile, a gel overlay or an acrylic nails structure can be good preventive options.

Knocks and bad habits

Direct knocks, opening packaging with your nails, typing hard or biting your cuticles are the most common causes of breaks. Nails with enhancements (gel, acrylic, polygel) can also suffer if they catch on something: the artificial structure withstands the impact, but if the force is too great, it breaks along with the natural nail.

Nutritional deficiencies and health issues

A lack of biotin, iron or zinc weakens keratin. If your nails break very often and are also ridged or discoloured, it's worth checking with a health professional to rule out deficiencies.

Salon repair vs home care: when do you need a professional?

Not every break needs a trip to the salon. It all depends on where and how the nail has broken.

Simple breaks you can deal with at home

  • Small crack at the side of a natural nail with no enhancement: file gently in one direction only (never back and forth) and apply a nail hardener to protect the area.
  • Surface peeling at the free edge: a fine-grit file (180-240) and cuticle oil may be enough.
  • Tiny chip in the polish: if the natural nail isn't affected, just touch up the polish.

In these cases, the key is not to pull at the loose piece, as you could tear off healthy layers.

When to go to a salon

  • The break reaches the nail bed (the pink part) and hurts or bleeds.
  • A gel or acrylic nail has snapped and there's loose artificial material.
  • The crack runs across the nail (side to side) and the nail moves.
  • You want to keep a freshly done manicure looking even without redoing it all.

In these cases, a broken nail repair in Gandia or Ontinyent is sorted quickly in the salon with professional materials you won't find at home.

Modern nail repair techniques

From our experience in the salon, the technique is chosen after assessing the type of break, the condition of the natural nail and whether it already has an enhancement.

Gel repair: reinforcement and durability

The most versatile technique. A thin layer of builder gel is applied over the damaged area, cured under an LED lamp and filed to match the other nails. The result is a practically invisible repair that lasts as long as the rest of the manicure.

This technique works especially well on nails with gel or gel polish, because the product blends with what's already there.

Partial extension for deep breaks

When a significant piece of nail has been lost, the missing part is rebuilt using a tip or a nail form. Gel, acrylic or polygel is applied only to the affected area and shaped to match the length and shape of the other nails. It's the right option if the break has taken away much of the free edge.

Professional bonding and finish

For clean cracks where the two pieces fit together, professional cyanoacrylate glue is used (much stronger and more precise than household glue) and reinforced with a thin layer of gel or silk wrap. The finish is filed and buffed until it's smooth to the touch.

The repair process at Adrian Beauty Studio

This is what a typical nail repair appointment looks like at our salons in Gandia and Ontinyent:

Assessment and cleaning

First we assess the break: how deep it is, which way it runs and whether the nail bed is damaged. The area is cleaned, any loose pieces are carefully removed and it's disinfected. If there's a damaged enhancement, only the affected part is removed so as not to weaken the healthy nail; for this we follow the same protocol as for a safe gel and acrylic removal.

Applying the chosen technique

Depending on the assessment, we apply builder gel, rebuild with a tip, or bond and reinforce. In every case we use primer for good adhesion and cure properly under an LED lamp. A standard single-nail repair takes around 10 minutes.

Finish and aftercare

The nail is filed to match the shape and thickness of the others, top coat is applied if the nail is polished, and the cuticle is moisturised with oil. Before you leave, you'll get specific care tips for the first few hours.

Simple repair vs gel reinforcement

It's a very common question: is gluing enough, or is it better to reinforce?

Simple repair (bonding)Gel reinforcement
Best forClean cracks, small breaksDeep breaks, fragile nails, lost structure
How long it lasts1-2 weeks (until your next infill or manicure)3-4 weeks, like a new manicure
Time in the salon5-10 minutes10-15 minutes
StrengthModerate: a temporary fixHigh: the nail is as strong as the others

If you only have a week to go until your next manicure, a simple repair is usually enough. If you've just had your nails done and want the repair to last the whole cycle, gel reinforcement is the better investment.

Aftercare after a nail repair

First 24 hours

  1. Avoid soaking your hands in hot water for at least 2 hours (no washing up without gloves or long baths).
  2. Don't file or fiddle with the repaired nail.
  3. Apply cuticle oil at night to keep the area hydrated.
  4. If you notice any lifting or discomfort, contact the salon before trying to fix it yourself.

Long-term care

  • Wear gloves for cleaning and gardening.
  • Moisturise your cuticles every day: a dedicated oil (jojoba, argan or vitamin E) makes a real difference.
  • Don't use your nails as tools (opening cans, scratching off labels).
  • Keep to a regular maintenance schedule: every 3-4 weeks for infills or a fresh set of polish.
  • If your nails break often, consider a strengthening treatment such as a plain manicure with a strengthening coat.

FAQs about broken nail repair

How long does a broken nail repair last?

It depends on the technique. A simple bonding repair lasts 1 to 2 weeks, just enough to get you to your next manicure. A gel reinforcement can last 3 to 4 weeks, practically the same as a new manicure. It also depends on your habits: if you work with your hands, wearing protective gloves will make it last longer.

Does a professional repair hurt?

In the vast majority of cases, no. The work is done on the surface of the nail and doesn't touch living tissue. If the break has reached the nail bed and the area is sensitive, we work with extra care and can apply a mild antiseptic. If there's active bleeding or significant swelling, it's best to wait a couple of days before the repair so the area can recover.

When will the nail grow back completely?

Fingernails grow an average of 3-4 millimetres a month. If the break was significant, it can take 3 to 6 months for the nail to renew completely. A professional repair doesn't speed up growth, but it protects the nail while it grows and stops the crack from spreading. Good hydration and diet help it grow back healthier.

Can I fix a broken nail at home?

For surface breaks and small cracks at the side, yes. A gentle file and a hardener may be enough. However, if the break is deep, affects an enhancement or reaches the nail bed, a home repair with supermarket glue can make things worse: household glue isn't flexible, can trap moisture and encourage infection. In those cases, it's worth going to a professional salon.

What's the difference between a repair and redoing the whole manicure?

A repair fixes only the affected nail and leaves the rest of the manicure untouched. It's quicker (around 10 minutes compared with 35-90 for a full manicure) and cheaper: a single nail repair costs €4.50. Redoing the whole manicure only makes sense if several nails are damaged or you're already due a refresh because of natural growth. If only one nail has broken and the rest are perfect, a single repair is the most practical option. Check current prices on our nail repair service page.

Why do my nails keep breaking?

Frequent breaks usually point to a mix of factors: naturally thin nails, lack of moisture, regular contact with chemicals (detergents, solvents) or nutritional deficiencies. If you also wear enhancements, too much length or irregular maintenance increases the risk. In the salon we can assess your nails and recommend the best technique to reduce breaks: sometimes a simple change of shape (from almond to squoval) or length makes a big difference.

Is it better to repair or redo the whole manicure?

If only one or two nails are damaged and the rest of the manicure is still in good shape, repairing is the best option: quicker, cheaper and no unnecessary wear on healthy nails. If your nails have gone more than 4 weeks without maintenance and the regrowth shows, a full infill or a new manicure may be worth it. Your nail technician will advise you based on the actual state of your nails when you arrive.
