Regular OPI Polish vs Gel and Gel Polish: Which Should You Choose?

Regular polish, gel and gel polish each do a different job. The real differences are how long they last, how they come off and how easily you can change colour.
Classic polish, gel and gel polish each do a different job, and none of them is objectively better than the others. The main differences are how long they last, how they come off and how easily you can change colour. Choosing well depends on your lifestyle, how long you want your manicure to last and what you want from your nails right now.
This guide compares the three options with real salon experience so you can book exactly what you need.
What is a classic OPI manicure?
Classic polish is the manicure we've always known: a protective base coat, two coats of colour and a glossy top coat. It air-dries or dries under a fan, with no UV/LED lamp needed.
What's in it
OPI is one of the leading professional brands of regular nail polish. Its OPI Nail Lacquer line has more than 200 shades in its current range, with formulas containing nitrocellulose resins for adhesion and plasticisers for flexibility. Unlike gels, it contains no monomers that need light curing.
The finish is a naturally rich shine, without the slightly "plasticky" look gel can sometimes have. Many clients prefer this texture because it feels lighter on the nail.
Application and drying
A full manicure with OPI polish takes around 30 minutes, including cuticle prep, filing, application and drying. It's touch-dry in about 10-15 minutes, although it takes around 2 hours to harden completely.
That means a little patience when you leave the salon: for the first few hours, avoid rummaging in your bag, doing up buttons or handling small objects.
Gel vs classic polish: the key differences
"Gel" can mean two different things: gel nails (extensions or reinforcement with builder gel) and gel polish. Here we're comparing gel polish with classic polish. If you're interested in how extensions compare, see our gel nails guide or our comparison of acrylic, gel and polygel.
How long they last
| Feature | Classic OPI polish | Gel polish |
|---|---|---|
| Average wear | 5-7 days without chips | 2-3 weeks |
| Water resistance | Moderate | High |
| Shine over the days | Gradually fades | Stays the same |
| Best for | Changing colour often | Maximum wear without touch-ups |
Gel clearly wins on longevity. But that advantage comes with a catch: commitment. With gel, you're tied to the same colour for weeks. With OPI, you can switch shades every week if you feel like it.
Application and removal
Gel cures under a UV/LED lamp (30-60 seconds per coat) and needs gentle filing or an acetone soak with foil to come off. If you're wearing gel polish and want to switch to OPI, removal adds about 10 minutes (and €3) to your appointment. For more detail on how gel is removed, we have a dedicated guide on gel and acrylic nail removal.
Classic polish comes off in seconds with a cotton pad and remover. No filing, no waiting, no weakening of the nail surface.
Cost
A classic OPI manicure is the most affordable option at any professional salon. At our salons it costs €15, compared with €20 for gel polish and from €30 for gel, and if you add the cost of having gel removed (ideally done at the salon), the gap widens. Check up-to-date prices on our classic polish service page.
Gel polish vs OPI: what's the difference?
Gel polish (also called Shellac or semi-permanent polish) sits halfway between classic polish and builder gel. Many clients mix up gel polish and gel, but technically they're different products. To find out more, we have a complete guide to gel polish: what it is and how long it lasts.
Wear and durability
Gel polish lasts 2 to 3 weeks looking perfect. Classic OPI lasts 5 to 7 days with proper care (a little less if you use your hands a lot or are often in contact with water and cleaning products).
For one-off occasions — a wedding, a holiday, an event — gel polish gives you peace of mind for weeks. For everyday wear with frequent changes of look, OPI is more practical.
Look and finish
Both give a glossy finish, but with subtle differences. Gel polish has a more "sealed", even shine, almost like a layer of glass. Classic OPI gives a softer, more natural shine that, in our experience at the salon, many clients prefer for the office or for events where they want an elegant look that isn't too flashy.
When it comes to colours, OPI offers an enormous choice with its OPI Colors line. Gel polish also comes in wide ranges, but shades are easier to mix with regular polish.
Care and upkeep
Gel polish needs less looking after while you wear it: it stands up to water, detergent and daily use without losing its shine. Classic polish needs a bit more TLC, but in return it comes off instantly and without harming the nail.
Pros and cons of classic polish
Why choose classic polish
- Change colour as often as you like: refresh your look every week without damaging your nails.
- No damage on removal: no filing and no pure acetone wrapped in foil.
- Lower price: the most affordable of the professional manicures.
- Ideal for nails that need a break: after months of gel or acrylics, classic polish lets your natural nails recover without going "bare".
- Perfect for one-off occasions: an OPI manicure for a special weekend, without committing for weeks.
- No lamp needed: no UV/LED exposure.
The limits of classic polish
- Wear limited to 5-7 days at best.
- Prone to knocks and scratches, especially in the first few hours.
- If your hands are often in water (hospitality, cleaning, swimming pool), wear drops to 3-4 days.
- It doesn't add any structural strength to brittle nails (for that, a semigel (now: gel without extension, €30) or builder gel would be better).
How to care for your OPI manicure
The first 24 hours
- Don't put your hands in hot water for at least 2 hours after application.
- Avoid handling hard objects (keys, coins, zips) for the first hour.
- Don't apply hand cream until the polish has fully hardened. The oil can weaken the bond of the top layers.
- If you get an accidental mark, don't try to "fix" it at home. A touch-up at the salon is better.
Daily care to make it last longer
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning. This is the single most effective tip for making your polish last, and it applies to gel polish too.
- Use cuticle oil every night. It keeps the skin around the nail hydrated and reduces the dryness that causes tiny lifts in the polish.
- Don't use your nails as tools (opening cans, picking at labels). It sounds obvious, but it's the number one cause of early chips.
- If a corner lifts, dab on a drop of clear top coat as a temporary fix until your next appointment. It's also a handy trick for your feet after a pedicure, as we explain in our pedicure aftercare guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does classic OPI polish last?
Under normal conditions, 5 to 7 days without visible chips. How long it actually lasts depends on things like contact with water, how much you use your hands and how well the nail was prepped. A good professional base coat can add 1-2 extra days. At our Gandia and Ontinyent salons we always prep the nail with a degreaser and a dedicated OPI base to get the best possible adhesion.
Is gel better than classic polish?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Gel is better if you want maximum wear (2-3 weeks) and resistance to knocks. Classic polish is better if you like changing colour often, would rather not put your nails under a UV/LED lamp or want the most affordable option. In our experience at the salon, many clients switch between the two depending on the season: gel for holidays or busy periods, OPI for everyday.
Can I do classic polish at home?
Technically yes — in fact, OPI is sold to the public. But a professional result is quite different from a home one for three reasons: cuticle prep (which decides how long it lasts), the technique of thin, even coats, and the quality of the finishing top coat. A professional application lasts quite a bit longer than one done at home. If you want to practise at home, invest in a good cuticle remover and apply very thin coats, letting each one dry completely.
Which other regular polish brands are good besides OPI?
In the professional segment, Essie and Zoya are solid alternatives with good pigment and wear. CND Vinylux has a long-wear line (up to 7 days) with a self-hardening top coat system. At Adrian Beauty Studio we work with OPI because its consistent formula and wide range of shades let us cover almost any colour request. The OPI Colors range is refreshed every season with limited collections.
Does gel polish damage nails like gel does?
Gel polish is less aggressive than builder gel because the nail surface doesn't need such heavy buffing. However, acetone removal can dry out the nail if it's done often without moisturising afterwards. At a professional salon it's standard to apply a nourishing oil after every removal. If you alternate gel polish with spells of classic OPI polish, your nails get time to recover without you having to go without colour.
Why does classic polish scratch more easily than gel?
Regular polish forms a softer, thinner film than cured gel. As it doesn't cure under a lamp, its molecular structure stays more flexible but also more vulnerable to wear. That's why rubbing against hard surfaces (keyboard, bag, keys) leaves visible marks sooner. A good top coat reduces this, and adding a thin coat of top coat on day three can bring back the original shine.
What's the difference between gel polish and gel?
Gel polish is a thin layer applied over the natural nail that cures under an LED lamp. It doesn't add thickness or structure. Builder gel, on the other hand, creates a thicker layer that strengthens the nail and can be used to sculpt extensions. They're different products for different uses: gel polish is for long-lasting colour, builder gel is for strengthening or lengthening. You can see the differences in detail in our comparison of acrylic, gel and polygel.
Classic polish in Gandia and Ontinyent
At Adrian Beauty Studio we offer classic manicures with OPI polish at both our salons. Whether you visit us in Ontinyent, in the heart of the Vall d'Albaida, or at our Gandia salon, in La Safor, we work with the full OPI Colors range so you can find exactly the shade you're after.
If you're not sure which type of manicure suits you, we can advise you at your appointment. Many clients who come in asking for gel discover that classic OPI works better for their routine (and vice versa). There's no wrong option: just the one that fits what you need right now.
