OPI Polish vs Semigel: Differences, How Long They Last and Which to Choose

OPI polish and semigel differ in how long they last and how they set: OPI air-dries and lasts 5-7 days; semigel — now gel on the natural nail, no extension — needs a UV/LED lamp and lasts 3 to 4 weeks.
A note on the name (October 2026). What this guide calls "semigel" now appears on our menu as maintenance gel on the natural nail: the same product and the same technique as always, booked as gel nails, short length, maintenance (no extension) — €30 and 55 minutes. It isn't a separate service, and we've kept the name "semigel" here because it's what our clients have always asked for.
The main difference between OPI polish and semigel is how long they last and how they set: OPI air-dries and lasts 5 to 7 days, while semigel — now our maintenance gel on the natural nail — needs a UV/LED lamp and lasts 3 to 4 weeks without chipping. Neither harms the natural nail when it's applied and removed properly. They're also two of the most requested manicures in Gandia at our salons in Gandia and Ontinyent, and choosing between them almost always comes down to your pace of life and how much you care about changing colour. Also available as manicures in Ontinyent.
If you've landed on this comparison not knowing which to ask for at your next appointment, you'll find a clear answer at the end. To dig into each option separately, see the complete semigel guide or the details of our classic OPI polish.
What's the Difference Between OPI Polish and Semigel?
Composition and Application
Classic OPI polish is a highly pigmented nitrocellulose lacquer applied in thin coats that air-dries in 10–15 minutes. At the salon it includes a protective base coat, two coats of colour and a sealing top coat. All in all, the service takes around 30 minutes from nail prep to the final finish.
Semigel is a hybrid formula that combines properties of classic polish and gel (gel with no extension in Gandia). It's applied much like ordinary polish, but each coat needs curing under a UV/LED lamp for 30 to 60 seconds. The result is a stronger, more flexible film than air-dry polish. Also available as gel with no extension in Ontinyent.
The key difference in prep: OPI doesn't need the nail to be buffed or dehydrated aggressively. Neither does semigel, although the surface is lightly prepped to improve adhesion without damaging the nail plate.
Shine and Finish
Semigel has a glassy shine that's fully sealed by curing under the lamp; that finish stays practically the same from day one until removal. OPI, for its part, has an excellent shine for the first few days that can lose some lustre towards the end if you don't add a maintenance top coat.
Where OPI is unbeatable is variety: hundreds of shades with unique finishes — creams, holographics, shimmer, glitter, chrome — that aren't always available in semigel formulas. If you love changing your look every week, that palette is a strong argument.

How Long Does Each Last?
How Long OPI Polish Really Lasts
In normal conditions — office work, moderate housework, everyday activity — OPI lasts 5 to 7 days before the first chips appear at the tips. With basic care (gloves for washing up, a top coat every 2–3 days) it can still look good at 10 days.
What shortens wear is frequent contact with water and soap, cleaning products without gloves, and very long nails with square tips, which take more leverage at the edge and tend to chip sooner.
How Long Semigel Lasts
Semigel usually lasts 3 to 4 weeks without chipping or losing its shine. What usually brings you back for removal isn't wear, but growth of the natural nail, which starts to show at the cuticle after three or four weeks.
On slow-growing nails, semigel stays in perfect condition for the full 4 weeks with the right care. You can read more about that care in the article on the pros and cons of semigel.
Price and Budget: Which Is Cheaper?
What OPI Costs
OPI costs less per appointment than semigel. But because it needs redoing every 5–7 days, the monthly total can match or even exceed semigel. If you change colour often or enjoy a weekly manicure, OPI is the most efficient option per appointment. Check current prices on the classic OPI polish service page.
What Semigel Costs
Semigel costs more per visit (€30 compared with €15 for OPI), mainly because of the longer time at the nail desk and the specialist formula. But since it lasts several times longer than OPI, many clients find it better value per month.
If your polish is always chipped before the week is out, semigel will probably work out cheaper by the end of the month. To compare both options — and see which other services can be combined in the same appointment — visit us at our Gandia salon or at Adrian Beauty Studio Ontinyent.
Daily Care: How to Look After Each One
Caring for OPI Polish
- First 2 hours: avoid water, soap and handling things until the top coat is completely dry.
- Gloves for cleaning: bleach and detergents break down polish within hours.
- Top coat every 2–3 days: a thin layer reinforces the seal and brings back the shine without adding thickness.
- Cuticle oil: jojoba or sweet almond oil every day keeps everything looking cared for and stops the skin around the nail from standing out.
- Remove it properly: an acetone pad, no scraping. Forcing polish off takes part of the nail's top layer with it.
Caring for Semigel
- First 24 hours: avoid long spells in hot water (hot tubs, long baths) so the cure can fully settle.
- Don't remove it at home without the proper acetone process: forcing it to lift pulls off layers of natural nail and can leave the nail plate thin and sensitive.
- Moisturise hands and cuticles with oil or cream several times a day; UV curing can slightly dry out the skin around the nail in more sensitive skin.
- Sun protection on your hands: if you'll be in strong sun, SPF stops pale shades from yellowing.
OPI Polish Trends for 2026
Colours and Finishes Everyone Wants
OPI's 2026 palette balances two opposite looks that complement each other: warm earth tones (terracotta, burnt copper, dark mustard, hazelnut) for every day, and mirror chrome or glass-effect finishes for when you want instant impact.
Some of the most requested finishes at the nail desk this year:
- Chrome / mirror: high-definition metallic nails created with chrome powder over the colour. Especially striking in silver, gold and copper.
- Glazed donut: translucent shades with pink or beige shimmer that add depth without being loud. On trend since 2024 and still one of the most requested finishes.
- Jelly nails: semi-sheer polish that lets the natural nail show through; lovely in fresh spring–summer shades.
- Minimalist French: a very fine line at the tip in colours (beige, nude, pale lilac, black) instead of classic white.
- Monochrome burgundy and plum: deep burgundy is now the timeless autumn–winter shade and works at any length.

How to Make OPI Polish Last Longer
OPI has a reputation for not lasting as long as other options, but a simple routine buys you several extra days without spending on special products.
Before your appointment
- Come with no cream, oil or old polish on your nails. Grease directly interferes with how well the base coat bonds.
- If your nails have fragile edges or are very long in places that tend to break, mention it at the salon; sometimes shortening them very slightly reduces the risk of early chipping.
The first 3 days at home
- Avoid putting your hands in hot water more than you need to.
- Wear gloves for washing up, even if it seems quick: 10 minutes in soapy water is worth several days of top-coat wear.
From day 4
- Apply a light coat of clear top coat; no need for precision — just cover the tips and sweep over the surface.
- If a small chip appears at the edge, seal it straight away with top coat before it spreads towards the middle of the nail.
These tricks won't turn OPI into semigel, but they will make it last noticeably longer at no extra cost.
When to Choose OPI? When to Choose Semigel?
Choose OPI polish if...
- You like changing colour every week or every two weeks, and the regular manicure ritual is part of the fun.
- You have short or medium natural nails with little exposure to water or harsh products.
- You want to try seasonal trends or chrome / jelly colours without committing for weeks.
- You prefer easy removal you can do at home if needed.
- You want the lowest price per appointment and don't mind slightly more frequent visits.
Choose semigel if...
- Your daily life involves a lot of water, heavy housework or manual work.
- You'd rather not think about your nails for 3–4 weeks between appointments.
- You love an even shine that looks the same from day 1 to the last day.
- Your nails tend to peel and you want something that protects them without the harshness of hard gel.
- You want fewer salon visits without compromising on the finish.

OPI Polish vs Semigel FAQs
Is OPI polish better than semigel?
Neither is objectively better: it depends on how you use them and what matters to you. OPI wins if you value colour choice, the freedom to change your look every week and removal with no process. Semigel wins if you need three to four weeks of wear, minimal upkeep and a shine that resists daily wear without touch-ups. Many clients alternate between the two depending on the season: semigel in summer or busy periods, OPI when there's more time for frequent visits.
How long does OPI polish really last?
With correct professional application and basic care — gloves for washing up, a top coat mid-week — OPI lasts 5 to 7 days in normal use, and can still look good at 10. Without care and with frequent exposure to water or cleaning products, the tips can start chipping after 4–5 days. Nail shape matters too: very square, long tips take more direct knocks and tend to chip sooner than oval or almond tips.
Can I switch from OPI to semigel without damaging my natural nails?
Yes, no problem. Switching from OPI to semigel needs no special prep and causes no damage if the nail is in good condition. Semigel doesn't need heavy filing or abrasive bonding powders. If you've been wearing hard gel or acrylic nails in Gandia and want to move to semigel, what determines the state of your nail is how the previous product was removed, not the new formula. You can see how it's done properly in the article on full removal of gel and acrylic nails. Also available: acrylic nails in Ontinyent.
Which classic polish brand is better than OPI?
OPI is the industry benchmark for its long-wearing formula, high pigmentation and huge palette. Other professional-quality brands include Essie (known for its nudes and pinks), CND Vinylux (a formula that partly sets with natural light to extend wear) and Sally Hansen Professional. In practice, the difference between top brands is small; application technique, nail prep and aftercare affect the result far more than the name on the bottle.
Is OPI polish sustainable and eco-friendly?
OPI has gradually reformulated its range to remove the most questioned ingredients: its formulas now leave out compounds such as toluene, formaldehyde and DBP. However, like most polishes on the market, it isn't 100% natural or fully biodegradable. If sustainability matters to you, ask at the salon which cleaner-formula lines are available at the time; the range changes quickly.
Which One Will You Choose?
Whether you choose OPI or semigel, the end result depends largely on the quality of the application and the condition of your nail beforehand. Proper prep, the right base coat and professional products make the difference between a finish that lasts as expected and one that starts to fail after two days.
At Adrian Beauty Studio we do both services with professional products and prep tailored to your nail type. If you're not sure which suits your routine, the team will advise you, no strings attached, before we start.
