Lash lift with or without tint: which to choose for your lashes

Whether to add tint to your lash lift depends mostly on the natural colour of your lashes. Here is how to choose, with timings, prices and aftercare for each option.

Choosing between a lash lift without tint and one with tint is not just a matter of taste: the natural colour of your lashes largely decides which option will give you a visible, satisfying result. Getting it right at the first appointment saves extra visits and makes sure the treatment suits your own eyes.

What is a lash lift, and how is it different from a lash tint?

A lash lift is a cosmetic treatment that curls your natural lashes from the root using a silicone rod and two solutions: a lifting lotion, which temporarily changes the inner bonds of the keratin, and a setting lotion, which fixes the new curl. The result is a more open look, with lashes lifted semi-permanently for 6 to 8 weeks, with no extensions or false lashes. The whole treatment takes about 45 minutes (€29).

A lash tint is a semi-permanent pigment that darkens the lashes so they look more defined. When it is combined with a lift, it goes onto the lashes once they are curled and set, as an extra step of 10 to 15 minutes (a lift with tint takes about 60 minutes in total and costs €38). The colour lasts 3 to 4 weeks, less than the curl, because the pigment fades with washing and the lashes' natural renewal.

The key difference is this: a lift works on the shape of the lash; a tint works on its colour. Dark lashes with good volume do not need tint to look defined once curled. Blonde, grey or very fair lashes, on the other hand, will stay almost invisible however well they are curled. The right choice starts with knowing your own lashes.

Lash lift without tint: a natural result with a soft curl

A lash lift without tint works only on the structure of the lash, lifting and curling it without changing its natural colour. The technician places a silicone rod on the eyelid, fixes the lashes with a special adhesive and applies the two solutions in the order set by the protocol. After the first 24 hours of aftercare, the curl is set semi-permanently.

The result can be subtle or very noticeable depending on your starting colour. At the salon we see that many clients with dark brown or black lashes find a lift without tint defined enough to skip mascara day to day. For options and current prices, see our lash lift without tint page.

Who a lash lift without tint suits best

This option is especially good for three types of client: people with naturally dark lashes (dark brown or black), anyone who has reacted to cosmetic dyes before, and those who want a clean result with no pigment to keep up. It is also the most common choice for a first lash lift, when you want to see the curl before adding colour.

What it looks like and how long it lasts

On dark lashes of medium or good density, a lift without tint opens up the eyes much like a good curling mascara, but semi-permanently. There is no visible fading phase: the result stays the same from day one until the lashes complete their natural renewal and drop back to their original position. Many clients with dark lashes who choose the version without tint keep it that way at later appointments, without adding colour.

Lash lift with tint: more definition, colour and contrast

A lash lift with tint combines the semi-permanent curl with a darkening pigment, giving the biggest visual impact you can get from a lash treatment without extensions. Many of the clients who book a lift at Adrian Beauty Studio in Gandia and Ontinyent choose to add the tint from their very first appointment.

The technician applies the pigment (usually black or dark brown) once the curl is set, leaving it on for 10 to 12 minutes before removing the excess. Your lashes come out curled, lifted and darker from day one, giving you defined eyes that show clearly with no make-up.

When adding tint to your lift is worth it

Tint really earns its place when lashes have little natural pigment: blonde, red, grey or very light brown. Without it, the curl can go almost unnoticed on these shades. It also helps fine or sparse lashes, where darkening makes the whole fringe look thicker and more defined. On medium to light lashes, adding tint changes the result a great deal; on lashes that are already dark, the gain is minimal.

What it looks like and how long it lasts with tint

Lashes with a lift and tint look defined without make-up, as if you were wearing mascara. The full effect (strong curl plus dark colour) looks its best for about 3-4 weeks. After that the colour starts to fade, although the curl stays for the rest of the cycle. For more on this combination and its aftercare, see our guide to the lash lift and tint combination.

Finish and look depending on lash colour

On black or dark brown lashes, the visual difference between with and without tint is small: the curl alone already gives a clearly visible result. On mid-brown lashes, tint adds noticeable extra definition. On light or grey lashes, the gap widens dramatically: without tint the lift can be almost invisible from a short distance, while with tint the result is transformative.

How long the visible effect lasts

The curl lasts exactly the same with either option: 6 to 8 weeks. What varies is the life of the colour in the tinted version, which is 3 to 4 weeks. If you choose the combination, you will notice the colour starting to fade from around week 3-4, while the curl is still there. With a lift without tint, the result looks the same throughout the cycle, with no noticeable fading phases.

Aftercare for each option

Both share the essential rules for the first 24 hours: no water, steam, sauna or eye make-up, and no rubbing your lashes. With tint there is an extra 3-week precaution: avoid products that speed up colour loss, such as exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA), retinol, and waterproof mascara with oil-based removers. For the full aftercare routine, see our guide to caring for your lashes after a lash lift.

Which should you choose for your type of lashes?

The rule of thumb technicians use at the consultation is simple: the lighter your natural lash colour, the more you need tint for a visible result; the darker your lashes, the less you need it. Thickness and density are secondary factors that also play a part in the final recommendation.

Light, blonde or grey lashes

Lashes with little pigment (blonde, almost transparent, grey or very light brown) do not create enough contrast even when perfectly curled. For this type, a lift with tint is what we recommend in the vast majority of cases. Here the tint is not an optional extra: it is what makes the whole treatment visible. Our guide to the lash lift and tint combination explains in detail how it works for these lashes.

Dark, well-defined lashes

Dark brown or black lashes with good density are where a lift without tint shines. The lift from the root is clearly visible thanks to the natural pigment, and the eyes look noticeably more open without added colour. Choosing no tint here means less chemical exposure for the lash and simpler aftercare, with almost the same visual impact as the full combination.

Short, fine or sparse lashes

Fine or sparse lashes benefit from tint, because the colour makes each lash more visible and the whole fringe looks thicker and more defined. On very short lashes, a lift has a more limited effect in general: there is less length to show off the curl. If length is your main concern, our guide to lash lift vs lash extensions helps you see when a lift is enough and what extensions offer (a service we do not provide at our salons).

Can you add tint after a lash lift?

Yes. A lash tint can be done separately after a lift, as long as at least 48 hours have passed since the curl was done. There is no need to repeat the whole lift: the technician applies the pigment to the curled lashes in a session of about 15 minutes (lash tint, €14).

This flexibility is handy if you want to try the curl without colour before deciding whether to add tint next time, or if the colour has faded but the curl is still there. In practice, though, the most efficient option is to plan both from the first appointment. If you are unsure before booking, the team at our Gandia salon or our Ontinyent salon can advise you on the best option during the appointment itself.

Combining a lash lift with other treatments

A lash lift, with or without tint, cannot be combined with lash extensions while the curl lasts. The lifting solution changes the structure of the natural lash that the extension would be glued to, affecting both how well the adhesive holds and the health of the lash. To understand when you can switch from one to the other, our guide to lash lift vs lash extensions explains the recommended timings and how to choose.

With the brow treatments in Gandia (wax brow shaping, lamination or brow tint), there is no problem at all. Many clients pair a lash lift with brow shaping in Gandia in the same visit, at either of our two salons, for a fully done look in one session instead of two appointments. Also available: brow shaping in Ontinyent and brow treatments in Ontinyent.

A lash lift also goes well with a facial in Gandia, on one condition: the facial must always come before the lift, never after, so steam and cleansing products do not affect freshly treated lashes. Our guide to lash lift myths and facts covers this and other common questions about combining treatments. Also available: facial in Ontinyent.

Lash lift with or without tint: frequently asked questions

Is a lash lift without tint less noticeable than one with tint?

A lash lift without tint has less visual impact on light, blonde or grey lashes, where the curl does not create enough contrast without added pigment. On dark or deep brown lashes, the result without tint is clearly visible and the eyes look noticeably more open. How much difference tint makes depends on your starting shade: on dark lashes the gap is minimal; on light lashes, tint is what decides whether the treatment shows or not. Before you decide, the technician can quickly assess your natural lash colour during the consultation and point you to the best option.

How long does a lash lift without tint last?

A lash lift without tint lasts 6 to 8 weeks, which is roughly the natural renewal cycle of the lash. Unlike the tinted version, there is no gradual visible fading: the result is stable from day one until the lashes complete their cycle and return to their original position. To keep the effect going, the usual recommendation is a new lift every 6 to 8 weeks. Our guide to the lash lift: what it is and how long it lasts goes into the factors (how often you wash your face, oily products, your own growth cycle) that can shorten or extend the visible effect.

Can I wear mascara after a lash lift?

Yes, you can wear mascara as normal from 24 to 48 hours after the lift, with or without tint. For the first 24 hours, keep all products away from the area, including make-up and water, so nothing interferes with the setting of the curl. From the second day, your usual mascara will work noticeably better than before, because it starts from lashes that are already curled and lifted. If you have had tint, avoid waterproof formulas with oil-based removers, as they speed up colour loss.

How often can I repeat a lash lift?

A lash lift can be repeated every 6 to 8 weeks, which is the standard interval. Doing it sooner than 6 weeks is not recommended: the solution works on the inner structure of the keratin, and the lashes need to complete their renewal cycle before another treatment. Doing it more often can weaken the lashes and lead to breakage or early shedding. At the salon we see that clients who stick to the 6-8 week interval keep their lash density and strength with no sign of weakening, even after several years of regular treatments.

Does a lash lift damage your natural lashes?

A lash lift done with good-quality products and the right timings does not damage natural lashes. It involves a temporary chemical change to the keratin bonds (the same principle as a perm or straightening for hair), which does not cause breakage or extra shedding when the timings are adjusted to each type of lash. The risk comes if the solutions are left on too long, which is why the treatment should only be done by a qualified technician.
