Perianal Waxing: Preparation, Technique and Aftercare

Perianal waxing removes the hair around the anus with warm or flexible wax, applied by a trained beauty therapist. Here is how to prepare, what happens in the treatment room and how to look after the skin afterwards.

Perianal waxing removes the hair around the anus with warm or flexible wax, applied by a trained beauty therapist. The appointment takes about 5 minutes, needs very little preparation and the results last 3 to 5 weeks. It is a completely routine treatment in any professional salon, as ordinary as an underarm or bikini wax, and both women and men book it for hygiene, comfort or simply personal preference.

What perianal waxing is and why choose wax

Perianal waxing removes the hair from the perianal area — the skin around the anus — pulling it out at the root: warm wax goes on, then comes off with a quick pull against the direction of growth. Shaving only cuts the hair at the surface, so you feel regrowth within 24-48 hours; wax works on the follicle itself and keeps the area smooth for 3 to 5 weeks.

The choice of method matters more here than almost anywhere else, because the area is so sensitive. In our experience, warm wax is the technique professional salons prefer: it gives a clean result in a single session without irritating the delicate skin, as long as the temperature and technique are right. Many clients who try it in the salon stick with it, rather than going back to shaving or creams.

Our perianal waxing service is available at both Adrian Beauty Studio salons and can be combined with other intimate areas in the same appointment. If you want an overview of waxing methods and areas, our complete waxing guide covers that; this guide focuses on preparation, the professional technique step by step, and aftercare.

Perianal, Brazilian and Hollywood: what is the difference?

These three are easy to mix up when booking. A perianal wax covers only the area around the anus — no bikini line, pubic area or labia. A Brazilian works on the pubic area and bikini line in different finishes (strip, triangle or full), but does not always include the perianal area unless you ask for it. A Hollywood (full intimate wax) is the most complete option: pubic area, bikini line, outer and inner labia for women — or scrotum and bikini line for men — plus the perianal area, all in one session.

The practical tip: say exactly which area you want waxed when you book. Our guide to the Brazilian and Hollywood wax explains the differences in technique and coverage in more detail.

Why wax beats other methods for this area

Wax removes perianal hair from the root, leaving the skin smooth for 3 to 5 weeks. With regular sessions, hair tends to grow back finer and sparser, so density drops over time. Shaving causes itching as the hair grows back and greatly increases the risk of ingrown hairs in an area full of folds and constant friction. Hair removal creams are not recommended here: their active ingredients (ammonium or calcium thioglycolate) can irritate delicate skin.

Before your perianal wax

Good preparation improves the result and keeps discomfort to a minimum, both during and after the appointment. It comes down to hair length, hygiene and a few things to avoid in the 48 hours before. Follow these steps and you reduce the risk of irritation and help the wax grip properly from the first application.

Hygiene and ideal hair length

Perianal hair should be between 0.5 and 1 cm long for the wax to grip well. Under 0.5 cm there is not enough to hold on to; over 2 cm, your therapist will trim it first. The skin should be clean and completely dry: shower beforehand with a mild soap and do not apply creams or oils to the perianal area or buttocks, as moisturiser leaves a film that stops the wax gripping properly.

What to avoid in the days before

  • 48 hours before: avoid strong sun on the area without swimwear or protection.
  • 24 hours before: no moisturisers, oils or greasy products on the perianal area or buttocks.
  • On the day: do not shave or remove hair from the area any other way; come with clean, dry skin.
  • Temporary contraindications: active inflamed external haemorrhoids, recent cuts or wounds, skin irritation, active folliculitis or infection in the area. In any of these cases, postpone until fully healed.
  • Medication: topical retinoids and some photosensitising antibiotics make the skin more sensitive; if you take any of them, check with your doctor before your first wax.

The professional technique, step by step

A professional perianal wax follows a set sequence that guarantees hygiene, effectiveness and minimal discomfort. Your therapist works in a private room, with you in a position that gives precise access to the area and complete discretion. A professional salon normally has a written hygiene protocol for this area, including single-use materials and disinfecting surfaces between clients.

Which wax is used

For intimate, highly sensitive areas, the professional standard is flexible (gel-type) hot wax with a low melting point. It is applied at 36-40 °C, moulds to the folds of the skin, grips the hair rather than the skin and comes off without strips. Single-use spatulas are compulsory for hygiene: a spatula that has touched a client's skin never goes back into the wax pot.

What happens in the treatment room

  1. Quick check (1 min): your therapist checks for any active contraindications before starting.
  2. Preparing the skin (1 min): cleansing with an alcohol-free micellar wipe and a dusting of unscented talc to dry the skin and help the wax grip.
  3. Applying the wax (1-2 min): in the direction of hair growth, with a disposable spatula, in small sections for control and precision in the folds.
  4. Removing the hair (1 min): a quick pull against the direction of growth while the other hand holds the surrounding skin taut to reduce the pull on the skin.
  5. Finishing (1 min): wax residue is removed with a specific oil and a soothing lotion — azulene or aloe vera — is applied to calm the immediate redness.

Redness after the session is completely normal and fades within 1 to 3 hours in most cases. Small red dots on the follicles during the first few hours are also a normal reaction.

Aftercare for the perianal area

Aftercare is what prevents prolonged irritation, folliculitis and ingrown hairs in such a sensitive area. Perianal skin is close to mucous membrane, so it reacts more than other parts of the body and needs specific care for the first 48-72 hours. In our experience, most problems after an intimate wax — folliculitis, persistent itching, ingrown hairs — happen when aftercare is skipped, not because of the technique itself.

The first 24-48 hours

  • First 2 hours: avoid intense exercise, heat (sauna, hot bath) and tight synthetic underwear.
  • First 24 hours: wash with a mild, fragrance-free soap, wear loose cotton underwear and keep perfumes and alcohol-based products away from the area.
  • First 48 hours: avoid swimming pools, the beach and direct sun on the waxed area. No sex if the skin is still irritated.
  • Daily hygiene: pat the area dry with a clean towel, without rubbing.

Preventing ingrown hairs and irritation

Ingrown hairs happen when new hair gets trapped under the skin as it grows, inflaming the follicle. To prevent them, start gentle exfoliation from 72 hours after your wax, once or twice a week. Never exfoliate in the first 48 hours: the skin is more sensitive and friction can cause extra irritation or inflammation.

If you already have ingrown hairs, see our guide to ingrown hairs after waxing.

  • Soothing lotion with azulene or aloe vera: straight after the session and during the first few hours, to calm the redness.
  • Tea tree oil diluted to 2-3% in a carrier oil: mildly antiseptic; dab it only on individual inflamed follicles, not over the whole area.
  • Gentle exfoliant without abrasive grains: from 72 hours, once or twice a week, to help new hair come through and avoid ingrown hairs.
  • Fragrance-free moisturiser: from 24 hours on the buttocks, to keep the skin supple between appointments.

This routine is very similar to the one for other intimate areas, such as buttock waxing or the bikini area. For aftercare that applies to every waxed area, see our guide to caring for your skin after waxing.

How often to wax and the hair growth cycle

We recommend a perianal wax every 4 to 6 weeks. That fits the regrowth cycle: for most people, hair takes 3 to 5 weeks to reach the 0.5 cm the wax needs to grip. Coming back before 3 weeks makes the session less effective because the hair is too short. Waiting more than 8 weeks does no harm, although the hair may be coarser and the session a little more intense.

In our experience, clients who keep to a regular routine every 4-5 weeks notice the hair getting finer and sparser from the third or fourth session in a row. That finer hair makes each session more comfortable and quicker than the last.

Perianal waxing FAQ

Does perianal waxing hurt?

You feel a sharp, brief sting at the moment of the pull, similar to other intimate areas such as the bikini line. The area has a lot of nerve endings, so it is more sensitive than, say, the legs or forearms. But the whole appointment takes only about 5 minutes, which keeps the total discomfort short. Your therapist holds the skin taut on every pull to reduce the tug on the skin and how much you feel it. In our experience, most clients rate the first session at around 4 to 6 out of 10, and it gets noticeably easier from the second or third visit as the hair becomes finer and the follicle weaker. If you have a very low pain threshold, tell your therapist before starting so she can adapt the pace.

How long do the results last?

Between 3 and 5 weeks in most cases. It depends on your individual growth cycle, the thickness of the hair and how regular your previous sessions have been. Because wax removes hair from the root, the skin stays smooth to the touch for at least 3 weeks — unlike shaving, where you feel regrowth within 24-48 hours. After 3 or 4 months of regular sessions, many clients find the hair-free period stretches to 5-6 weeks, as the follicle weakens and hair grows back finer and sparser.

How often should I book?

Every 4 to 6 weeks is ideal, but it is not a fixed rule: it depends on where you are in your routine and on individual factors. In the first sessions, before the hair cycle has adjusted to waxing, it is best to book at the longer end (5-6 weeks) so the hair reaches the minimum 0.5 cm. Once the routine is established, most clients settle at 4 to 5 weeks. The season matters too: in hot months hair can grow faster and bring the interval down to 3-4 weeks, while in winter growth is usually slower and the interval drifts towards 5-6 weeks. Less than 3 weeks between appointments compromises the result; more than 8 weeks does no harm but can make the session more intense. Consistency is what makes the biggest difference to the texture and density of the hair over time.

Is hot wax safe on the perianal area?

Yes, when it is applied by a beauty therapist trained in intimate waxing. Professional technique says the wax should not go above 40 °C on delicate skin, to avoid burns. Single-use spatulas and disposable materials are compulsory under hygiene regulations. Wax is not suitable here if you have active inflamed external haemorrhoids, recent wounds or cuts, active skin irritation, widespread folliculitis or a viral infection such as active herpes in the area. In any of these cases, postpone until fully healed. If you have a health condition that directly affects the area, check with a doctor before your first session.

What is the difference between a perianal wax, a Brazilian and a Hollywood?

A perianal wax covers only the area around the anus, without the pubic area, bikini line or labia. A Brazilian works on the pubic area and bikini line in different finishes — strip, triangle or full — but does not always include the perianal area unless you ask. A Hollywood is the most complete: pubic area, bikini line, outer and inner labia for women — or scrotum and bikini line for men — and the perianal area, all in one session. People mix these up all the time, especially the first time they book. The practical tip is to say exactly which area you want waxed, or read our guide to the Brazilian and Hollywood wax before booking.

Can I have a perianal wax if I have sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin does not rule it out, but it does call for extra care. Your therapist can use a flexible gel wax formulated for reactive skin, which is softer and less irritating than conventional hard wax. Before the session, tell her about any known sensitivity, allergy or previous reaction to wax or its ingredients. For very reactive skin, a patch test on a small area before the first session is good practice. Aftercare matters even more: azulene lotion straight away, loose cotton clothing and no heat for the first 24 hours. If redness does not settle within 24 hours, or you get blisters or intense itching, see a dermatologist before waxing again.

How should I look after the area after waxing?

Aftercare goes in stages. First 2 hours: avoid heat, intense exercise and tight synthetic clothing. First 24 hours: mild, fragrance-free soap, loose cotton underwear and no perfumed creams or alcohol-based products. Between 24 and 48 hours: avoid pools, the sea and direct sun. From 72 hours: start gentle exfoliation once or twice a week to prevent ingrown hairs. A fragrance-free moisturiser on the buttocks from 24 hours keeps the skin in good condition between appointments. This routine greatly reduces folliculitis and ingrown hairs, the most common problems after an intimate wax. See our guide to caring for your skin after waxing for more detail.
